Everett told stories of his athletic abilities as a youngster. Apparently he was a fast runner. Fast enough that the school asked him to be on the track team and so he agreed. He had had no training but won all his events including the hurdles. When Everett was about 60 he showed us how he could hurdle by running down the yard and jumping over a rail fence that bordered their yard. When Everett was a young boy he was a bit mischievious. He would climb up in the Bellfry of the school and collect dirt from dirt dabber nests. Then crawl out on the open rafters high above the school classroom and crumble the dirt down onto the other students below. Everett Edmond Pogue. Born 20 Jan 1904 in Allen, Indian Territory, Oklahoma. Died 1 Jan 1995 in Rison, Arkansas. Buried in Oakland Cemetery, Leflore County, Oklahoma
After Everett's father was killed on the railroad he moved in with the Fulghams and as a young boy, cared for his Grandmother (Sallie Terry Fulgham) who was confined to the bed or chair. He would push her around the house in the rocking chair.
Everett eventually followed his fathers (and possibly his grandfathers) footsteps by working on the railroad. We don't know the occupation of this grandfather but his grandfather's uncle (E.T. Pogue) also worked for the Midland Valley Railroad. During the depression Everett moved his family at one point to California in order to find work, but soon moved back to NW Arkansas. Everett tried his hand at chicken farming (a disaster) and then worked in a glass factory before working on the railroad where he retired.
