PARENTS & SIBLINGS OF

MABEL IRENE McKEAG

Thomas Henry McKeag and Elizabeth Bachman

with Mabel Irene

Mabel Irene McKeag   Born 16 Nov 1901 in Turtle Creek, Pennsylvania.  Died 26 Jan 1994 in Detroit, Michigan.  Buried in Michigan Memorial Cemetery, Flat Rock, Michigan  She was an only child.
Mabel was born to a father of Irish descent and mother of German descent. Around 1911 she and her family moved to Detroit, Michigan where she remained most of her life. Her nickname was Mickey.

Her first job was at Frederick Sterns and Co in Detroit, Michigan where she worked for a brief period as a typist until she married in 1920. Her first husband was William (Bill) Hardison, who was a pipe coverer for Detroit Edison. She met Bill when she and her girlfriend lit a gas lamp in the window of her girlfriend's house. There was a sign in the window that a room was for rent and Bill saw the sign. He was going to inquire about a room when he saw Mabel there in the window. He was so moved by the prospect of meeting her that he had to walk around the block several times before he knocked on the door. Mabel's girlfriend must have liked Bill herself, because she tried to prevent them from meeting but it happened anyway. Bill said " When I saw you in the window, I said, 'That's the girl I'm going to marry.'" And he did.

Mabel had been brought up in the Lutheran church until meeting Bill who was Church of Christ. Bill and his cousin, Sewell Howard, were close friends, and Sewell's wife, Gertrude and Mabel were best friends. After several years of marriage, Mabel and Gertrude both walked the aisle of the Church of Christ together and were baptized on the same Sunday morning.

Bill died of lung problems from exposure to the asbestos pipe insulation he worked with. They had been married 30 years. After Bill's death, and Sewell had lost his wife Gertrude, Sewell and Mabel were married and shared 20 years of marriage together.   In 1920 Sewell Howard was working as a street car conductor and in 1930, he was a mechanic in an automobile manufacturing plant.   Sewell is buried in Acacia Park Cemetery, Beverly Hills, Michigan.
