Additional information on the Howells in Floyd County, VA

Andrew Jackson Howell b. ca. 1816 m. 9 Oct 1838 FCVA to Frances Carter - was probably a s/o Benjamin & Elizabeth Kendall Howell.  The 1830 MCVA Census lists only: Howell, Benjamin  001200001 - 0011201 & Howell, David M.  0011001 - 00010001 with sons ages 10-15 (b. ca. 1815-20)   David M.(Miller) m. Susannah Hylton, their s. age 10-15 would have been Beauford (b. ca. 1815).  According to the Howell sketch in "A Short History of Floyd County, VA", by Dr. Amos Wood, "Benjamin Howell was one of the early justices of the peace when the county was first formed. He was the father of Pleasant, Annie and Andrew. Pleasant Howell was Sheriff of Floyd."   There were two Andrew Howells in the 1840 Census: 

pg. 173 ‑ Andrew A. Howell 1 m. 20‑30 (b. ca. 1810‑20); 1 f. 0‑5; 1 f. 20‑30

pg. 189 ‑ Andrew Howell 2 m. 0‑5; 1 m. 5‑10; 1 m. 10‑15; 1 m. 15‑20; 1 m. 40‑50 (b. ca. 1790-1800); 1 f. 0‑5; 1 f. 1‑50; 1 f. 30‑40

The younger Andrew would have been Andrew Jackson b. ca. 1816 who m. 1838 to Frances Carter.   The older Andrew b. ca. 1790-1800 was the s/o David (Miller) Howell; he m.11 December 1823 Patrick County, VA to Caroline Taylor, sur. Jefferson Taylor.  In 1830, he was in Champaign County, OH, living near his grandparents, Joshua & Mary Howell.  In 1840, he had moved back to FCVA, and in 1850 he was in Wythe County, VA: #969 - Andrew  Howell 57 Miller; Caroline 47 Madison 16; Jefferson 14; Andrew 12; Maria  20; Eliza 12    In 1860, his w. Caroline Howell 57 was in Russell County, VA, living with her d. Maria who had m. Charles H. Mitchell.  In the1850 Census, Andrew was listed as a Miller, the same occupation as his father. 

 

Beauford (Beaufort) Howell b. ca. 1815 m. 19 Feb 1839 FCVA, this family moved to Wabash County, IN, then to KS.  The 1880 LDS Census search lists: Beaufort Howell, 67 b. VA, residing in Tioga, Neosho, Kansas.  LDS records further indicate his dob as: 23 May 1813 Franklin County, VA.  In an old transcribed letter from David M. Howell to his brother in OH, dated 29 Jan 1857, David stated “My son Beaufort has 6 children: 1 - Isabella Jane, the oldest 16 yrs; 2 - Chaplain Combs the oldest son, 12 yrs; 3 - Winfield Scott, near 10 yrs.; 4 - Elmetta Narcissey, 7 yrs.; 5 - David Burman, 4 yrs; 6 - Henry Langburn, 2 months.  Beaufort also wrote that: “I have been engaged in a woollen factory for many years (miller) and having become tired of the business, I am selling out with a view to moving to Kansas and farming and grazing stock.” 

 

Benjamin Howell b. ca. 1773 VA; m. 1 Dec 1801 MCVA to Elizabeth Kendall, was the s/o Benjamin & Elizabeth Howell, per MCVA WB I, pages 50‑51, Will of Benjamin Howell, Senr.  written 25 April 1799, proved August 1799, mentions sons David (m. Jean Allen) & Benjamin (m. Elizabeth Kendall) and d. Mary (m. 1 Apr 1806 MCVA to Matthew Bowles).  Benjamin, Sr. had at least two other children:  Daniel b. ca. 1759 PA; d. 1836 FCVA and Hannah b. ca. 1775 VA m. 17 Nov 1795 to Conrad Plasters.  Mary received property from her father in his will, which was deeded to her by her siblings in two deeds.    Unable to identify the parents of Elizabeth Kendall; however suspect she is related to the Kendalls from Fauquier County, VA.   FCVA WBC, page 187  Will of Benjamin Howell, probated 19 January 1854,  names his brother “old brother David Howell”, d. Nancy Edwards (m. 1832 Lewis Edwards, moved to Dickenson County, VA); d. Ann Howell (prob. never married); s. Pleasant Howell to be Executor and mentions other children, not named.  Other children include: Andrew Jackson m. 1838 Frances Carter; John Howell m. 1823 Sarah Rakes; Elizabeth Howell m. 1827 Joseph Edwards (she d. by 1840 Patrick County, VA); and  Larkin Howell d. bef. 1850 (FCVA Chancery Order Book 1, pg. 216, 1852, Benjamin & Pleasant Howell named adm. of Larkin’s estate, Larkin was in 1840 Patrick County, VA Census).  They also had at least two other daughters, 1 b. ca. 1810-1815 & 1 b. ca. 1800-20 that are unknown at this time.  Benjamin was Sheriff of Floyd County, VA 1841-1843.

 

Daniel A. Howell b. ca. 1799 m. 19 July 1821 Patrick County, VA to Elizabeth Russell, he prob. was s/o Daniel Howell, d. 1836 FCVA, from his 1st marriage to unknown.  Patrick County, VA Marriages:  Daniel Howell m. 19 July 1821 to Elizabeth Russell, consent of JoRiel (Daniel?) & Martha Russell, sur. David Howell b. 1767, s/o Joshua & Mary Howell m. Susannah Hylton, she was the d/o Elijah & Susannah Hylton, per Elijah’s MCVA Will (verbal) recorded July 1802 which mentions son-in-law, David Howell

 

David A. Howell m. Jean/Jane Allen, was the s/o Benjamin, Sr. & Elizabeth Howell, and is named as a son in the will of Benjamin, Sr. in MCVA 1799, WB1, pgs. 50-51.   The will of David Howell states: "to be distributed between Stephen Howell, Charity Spicklemier, Dorcas Jones (not James) of Indiana . . ."   This phrase suggests that all three of them were living in Indiana, which they were.  Patrick County, VA marriages lists:  Dorcas Howell m. 27 May 1805 Jonathan Jones and Charity Howell m. 25 Aug 1806 Abraham Speckelmen, d/o Lenard (?David must be misread) & Susana Howell, sur. David Howell.  Abraham & Charity Spicklemier were in Hendricks County, IN in 1850; and Jonathan Jones & Stephen Howell were in nearby Morgan County, IN in 1830 & 1840.   The 1850 Census indicates some of the Spicklemier children were b. in KY and that they were in KY by 1819 and in IN by 1828.  Per "Wayne County, Kentucky Marriages and Vital Records 1801‑1860", Vol. 1, Marriages A‑J, June Baldwin Bork, page 145:  “Howell, Stephen and Susannah Canada, surety Jonathan Jones.  Married 9 October 1817 by Richard Barrier.”  This would be Daniel & Jean Allen Howell's son, Stephen and the surety was his sister, Dorcas' husband, Jonathan Jones.

 

David N. Howell m. Nancy Carter, s/o Daniel Howell & unknown 1st. wife, d. 1836 FCV.  Daniel deeded property to David in 1822 & David N. Howell was Administrator of Daniel Howell’s estate in 1837.

 

Elizabeth Howell b. ca. 1828 m. Jacob G. Weddle, prob. d/o John & Sarah Rakes Howell - John had 2 female 10-15 (b. ca. 1825-30) in his hh in the 1840 Montgomery County, VA Census.  Eliza Howell m. John Hylton, d. 6 Jun 1855 FCVA, her death record lists her as d/o John & Sarah Rakes Howell, would have been the other daughter b. ca. 1825-30.

 

Hundley Howell b. ca. 1832; m. 1853 FCVA Rosannah M. Creasy, was s/o Moses Howell, d. 1872 Franklin County, VA, Hundley was listed in his hh in the 1850 Franklin County, VA Census: hh #1082 Howell Moses 55; Martha 50; William 21; Hundly 18; John 16; Creed 14; Meritt 12; Alcany 10; Martha 8 

 

John Howell b. ca. 1802 m. 27 March 1823 MCVA to Sarah Rakes, was the s/o Benjamin & Elizabeth Kendall Howell, per "Early Adventurers On The Western Waters", Montgomery County, VA Marriage Bonds, pg. 209 - “1823, March 22, John Howell and Sarah Rakes, d/o Henry Rakes, sur. Benjamin Howell and Henry Rakes; Benjamin is the father of John Howell”

 

Mark Howell m. Susannah Hylton, was the s/o Daniel Howell, Daniel deeded land to Mark in 1822 & Mark was listed in the Account of Sales for the Estate of Daniel Howell, (FCVA WBA, pg. 107, 1837)   Mark & Susannah they had at least 4 sons & 6 daughters.  Two additional daughters were:

1)  Elizabeth Howell m. 20 Nov 1848  FCVA to Aaron G. Nester.  They were in Carroll County, VA 1850-1880.  Carroll County, VA Death Records:  Nester, Elisabeth d. 23 Mar 1885, cause: fever, age: 58 years, parents: Mark Howell, pob: Floyd Co, VA, consort: married, informant: Aaron Nester, husband  

2) Nancy Howell m. 6 Apr 1848 FCV to Henry H. Thompson, marriage bond lists her as d/o Mark Howell 

 

William B. Howell b. 1827; m. 1853 Mary Ann Cassell, poss. s/o Moses Howell, d. 1872 Franklin County, VA and brother to Hundley.  A William Howell, age 21 (ca. 1829) is listed in the 1850 Franklin County, VA Census in the hh of Moses Howell.  William Howell is listed in the 1850 FCVA Census age 22 in the hh of Joseph Phlegar.
