| Notes for Hope Howland | ||||||||||||
| "The Howland's first home was on Summer Street where presumably Hope was born August 30, 1629. The family removed to the finer house which John Howland had built at Rocky Nook and first occupied in 1638."461 She "joined the Barnstable church Aug. 7, 1650." 457 She "died at the age of fifty four and was interred in the first cemetery laid out on Lothrop Hill. The headstone marking her grave is incised 'Here Lyeth Interred ye Body of MRS HOPE CHIPMAN wife of Elder John Chipman aged 54 years who changed this life for a better ye 8th of January 1683'."461 Photo of her tombstone on file.461, 462 Photo of tombstone taken by Barbara Fleming August, 1997 on file.234 "His [John Chipman] wife Hope Dyed ye 8 of January 1683." 455 "Most of the fine old stones [at Lothrop Hill Burying Ground] are in the front (north) portion of he yard, in the first twelve rows. The very oldest ones are several rows in, near the lowest part of the gorund. Hope Chipman's stone (5) tells us she died in 1683. . . The Chipman stone is in a very early styles, attractively lettered but lacking any decoration, somthing like a transitional form between the lettered fieldstone and the conventional slate." 462 "Hope Howland, who was born in 1629, married when she was about 17. Her husband was John Chipman who came in 1630 from Barnstaple, Devonshire, England. (Note that the English spelled Barnstaple with a P while the Americans spelled it with a B.)"283 "John married first, at Plymouth, Massachusetts, about 1647, Hope Howland, daughter of Pilgrim John Howland of the Mayflower and his wife Elizabeth (Tilley) Howland. Hope was born, probably in Plymouth, on 30 August 1629 and died on 8 or 18 January 1683. She is buried in the first cemetery laid out on Lothrop Hill, Barnstable. The headstone markin gher grave is inscribed, 'Here Lyeth Interred ye Body of Mrs Hope Chipman wife of Elder John Chipman Aged 54 ears who change this life for a better ye 8th of January 1683.'
