Thanks to Lisa Slighton have been able to identify Rosella Greene's parents and grandparents. Now have a given name for G. W. Greene as recorded on Rosella's marriage record. Rosella Greene was born between August 1872-August 1875 in Ashland, Tennessee the daughter of Gardner W. Greene, Jr. and Cornelia "Alice" Russell. Rosella married James H. Slightom October 22, 1887 in Jersey County, Illinois. Rosella and James had two daughters, Leila and Nancy born in Illinois. The only other known child of Gardner W. Greene, Jr. is Myrtle. There were probably other siblings. Myrtle lived in Nashville, Tennessee and had a daughter Gracie. We visited them in Nashville when I was about seven years old. Gracie was probably in her late teens or early twenties. I do not remember Myrtle's married name nor if there were other children. Have not been able to locate Gardner, Jr. and Alice in 1880 census records in any state. Know they were in Ashland City in 1872 when Rosella was born. They were not in Illinois when she married October 22, 1887. Mary A. Greene signed as a witness for Rosella's marriage. Since Rosella was 15 or younger, there should be permission to marry signed by a parent or guardian. Among my Mother's memorabilia was an ID badge with Gardner Jr.'s picture from the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis. He was a patrol guard at the Inside Inn. According to the St. Louis Historical Society, many people moved temporarily to St. Louis to work at the World Fair. A Gardiner Greene is listed in the 1890 St. Louis Directory as a Policeman. Gardner W. Greene, Jr., born 1852 in Tennessee, was the son of Gardner W. Greene, Sr. born 1812 in Virginia and Jamima Gibbs born 1814 in Tennessee. Gardner Jr.'s wife, Alice Russell, was born in Tennessee. Using Jr. and Sr. even though have not found them recorded that way. Eliminates confusion since there are three Gardner W.'s in the family. John, second son of Gardner, Sr. and Jamima, named his second-born son, Gardner W. also. Gardner W. Greene, Sr. and family are found in Davidson County, Tennessee 1850 and Cheatham County, Ashland City in 1860 and 1870. In 1880, Gardner Sr. and Jamima are in Cheatham Co. District 13. Gardner listed father born MA and mother VA. Jamima listed father born TN and mother KY. Their son, John, and wife, Rebecca, are listed as J. G. Green and R. E. Green in District 4. Daughter, Alvy J., married St Legis Scott. They were living in District 9 in 1880 with 4 children. Have not been able to find any of the other children in 1880 census records. |
