or 6 Feb 1903, daughter of James Grimshaw and Almeda (CLARK) CAYTON.
Charles m/2 about 1908 Emma Experience (BISBEY)
McADAMS, b Brookfield, Linn Co MO 1871.
Emma m/1 George McADAMS;
r Fullerton, Nance Co NE, and in Ada Co ID. Emma’s marriage to Charles took place at the bedside of Charles’s
father, Matthew Henry, who was very ill.
Matthew wanted to be sure that his wife Ellen would not have to care for
Annabel’s children. Emma’s daughter
Marybelle then became a member of the family.
Charles did not do well in school, and quit
in the middle grades. He then worked on
farms in Fullerton until he saved some money, whereupon he and a friend went to
Utah to work in the mines. With the
money he made in the mines, he bought a threshing machine, which he was told
was a good way to make a fortune. But
around Fullerton there were 2 drought years, and he had to sell the machine and
go out of the business. He did better after that buying his own ranch in
Cushing, near Fullerton. There were
further business failures in a plumbing business (Barber Plumbing, with his
mother), and in land speculation near a proposed dam which didn’t succeed in
providing irrigation water. For a time
Charles worked as a scaler, computing board feet for a lumber company in Yakima
WA, and later in Hoquim and Emmett.
Annabel apparently had Rheumatic Fever, and
died suddenly while nursing her baby Ada.
After Annabel died the children went for a while to live with their
grandparents, Matthew Henry and his wife.
Charles then fell in love with a girl named Jenny, but her parents
refused to let her marry a man with 5 children. Charles Luther was Assistant Editor of the Fullerton newspaper
“The Lance County Journal”, while they lived there. In Idaho they lived at Star, where Charles tended to his father’s
sheep. He was on the jury for the
famous Harry Orchard murder trial in Boise.
He worked as a ranger for the forest service at North Fork, Lemhi Co ID.
When he was 5, Charles’s mother taught him
to knit, since he had no sisters. He
always did beautiful knitting, embroidery, and crochet work. To top off his bad luck, at age nearly 79 he
was riding his bicycle to work one night, and was hit and killed by a car. [~ CSL:Buell Gen #2; CT State Lib:Aldrich

Oct 1883, d Oakland CA 24 Jul 1948, son of
William and Permelia Alice (REA) NICHOLSON.
James was a teacher. Before they
married, James ran a pool hall and barber shop. He had gone to barber school
in Denver. Ellen’s grandfather James C Cayton had business
dealings with him, and because of that, James
Nicholson saw Ellen at age 14 braiding her hair for school one
day, and right away said she was the girl he would
marry. Two years later he
did. For several years James ran “The
Mesa Pastime”, a gathering place, combination
soda fountain, barber shop, pool hall. Ellen helped with the business, and also was active in the PTA
and was
Sunday School President at her church. After the death of daughter Ada, they decided they could no
longer live in
Mesa. They sold the
business, had a yard sale of all their
belongings, bought a car with the money, and headed for
California.

m/2 Blackwell, Kay Co OK 13 Aug 1899 Sarah “Sadie” Elizabeth JONES,
b Trinidad, Las Animas Co CO 13 Feb 1877, d Ponca City, Kay Co 9 May 1930, on
Mothers‘ Day, daughter of Joel Preston and Mary Ann (WALTERS) JONES;
in 1910 they were in KS, and in 1920 in Meade, Meade Co KS. After that they lived in Ponca City, and
later in Phoenix.
M.M Barber was hired by Joel P Jones to run
a gas-powered engine at Joel’s sawmill.
This was in the early days of such engines, and there were not many
people who could run them. Sadie
belonged to the First Christian (Disciples of Christ) Church. M.M built a house in what is now Ponca City,
and he built no closets in it, since “no one ever hangs anything up anyway”.
He was an excellent fiddle player, and
organized the members of his family into a country dance band. Lena on piano, Lefty on fiddle, Theron on
guitar, and Myrle on bass fiddle. They
played for a living in most of northeastern Oklahoma in the 20’s and 30’s. Myrle went on to play guitar for a living,
and Lefty won a world champion fiddle contest in Long Beach CA in 1949. [~ Corresp:Clint Swalley ~]
