Samuel
?m/2 Harriet “Mother Hattie” WATKINS, b IA.
He ?m/3 Ida HARTMAN, b 1894.
The family moved to Minnesota Lake,
Faribault Co MN when Sam was about 2 years old. His uncle Chauncey had helped found the town, and invited his
brother Alvin to join him and enjoy the wonderful area and its rich farmlands. Sam led a varied, sometimes tragic, and a
very long life.
Sam’s first wife, Ada, was a graduate of
Wheton College in Iowa, and had moved to Minnesota 3 years earlier. This, Sam’s
first marriage, lasted but 2 years, when Ada died so suddenly in
childbirth. Sam took this very hard and
became a hermit who lived alone out of town.
After a few years he left for Iowa.
He married(?) again, and had a daughter Harriet. When Harriet was 9 years old (1892), Sam
walked off and she never saw him again.
He turned up in northern Wisconsin around
1903, probably to be near his first daughter Libby, who had married and was
living in Stinnett, Washburn Co WI. In
Wisconsin Sam had an affair with a young woman called Ida HARTMAN, b
Stinnett WI 10 Aug 1894, who at that time (1909) was about 15, to Sam’s
54. Later she married Louie ANDERSON. When Sam died he was 98 years old. [~ Corresp:Dennis D Barber ~]
