He was a machinist, and enlisted on October

first year of duty he fought in
several skirmishes with Forrest’s and

After that he became a locomotive

Matilda (---) SPENCER, b 1836, d 1898.
He m/3 Panton (he
“of Canton”) at age 75, 10 Oct 1899 Emily JACKSON.; r Canton NY.
Charles was a Civil
War veteran, a Private in the NY 60th infantry. He was a carpenter, and a builder, a drinker
and a “character“.
He was building a barn in the area, and story has it that he
returned from mid-day dinner with beer, a little “in his cups”. He walked out on a beam high up under the
rafters, to where his helper, a slight man, was working, picked him up, set him
around behind him, and continued on his way to the other side of the barn. The
helper was shaken, but lived to tell this tale.
On another occasion
Charlie was returning from shopping in Canton, riding on a hand car with the
Irish railroad workers. It was customary for a man who was buying supplies for
his family to say “I’ll take the change in whiskey”. So Charlie had his jug with his groceries when he hitched a ride
on the hand car. One of the men said “What have ye in yer jug, Mr.
Barber?”. “Vinegar“. Another pause. “I have a terrible pain in the stomach and vinegar is the only
thing that’ll cure it”. So saying, the
man grabbed the jug and helped himself to a generous number of swigs.
Matilda had a
daughter Iona SPENCER by her first marriage, born 1863/4, who married
Fred Leslie BARBER (see #853).

15 Nov 1876, daughter of Elisha Clinton and
Alice Cordelia (WHITE) HILLIARD; r Hartford.
Lucius graduated from Yale University in 1900. In 1911 he was appointed as the first
“Examiner of Public Records”
for Connecticut, and he also became assistant
State Librarian. He set a goal of
putting into print the vital records of
the Connecticut towns up to 1850. But after publishing New Haven and Norwich,
he found this would be too
expensive and time-consuming. He was an
amateur working in his spare time.
Thereafter he and the State Librarian George
S Godard made the State Library a depository for the early vital
records of the towns. This depository on file cards and in book
form (and on microfilm) is now known as the
“Barbour Collection”, which was eventually
published by the Connecticut Society of Genealogists in 1977 as
“Families of Early Hartford,
Connecticut”. There are many
manuscripts showing this work at the Connecticut
Historical Society Library in Hartford. [~ CT Hist Soc:LBBarbour Manuscript ~]
