EIGHTH GENERATION
601.
NOYES8 BARBER (Edwin Noyes7), b Paris, Stark Co OH 19 Jul 1840; d Los Angeles CA 11 Apr 1911; m
11 Apr 1872 Sarah N ADAMS (“Sallie”), b Manchester, England 6 Dec 1853,
d Yorba Linda 6 Nov 1924.
In 1861 Noyes
enlisted in Company H, 21st Illinois Infantry, for one month, and then in
Company F, 13th Illinois for 4 years, serving most of the time as Quartermaster
Sergeant and Commissary Sergeant. After the army, he was in the stove and tin
trade in Kansas City.
Next he was in
Wyandotte, employed as a salesman and grocer, for a short time. Then he returned to Kansas City in the
wholesale drygoods business for 3 years. They were married in the Shelly home
in Kansas City. In 1873, after their marriage, they moved to Elk Falls, Howard
County KS. “Never shall we forget the sensation in this struggling pioneer town
produced by the entrance of this handsome, stylish young couple. The bride
entered into everything in the social life of Elk Falls, giving assistance in
every possible way. Indulgent and
generous, she was adored by the children, advised her women friends about their
frocks, lent them her patterns, and even volunteered to superintend the
elaborate draping of the gowns of the day.”
“About 1872 the
largest and most up-to-date stock of dry goods hitherto known in the county set
up business at Elk Falls. The stock was soon in the charge of Noyes Barber,
manager. who had been in the employ of
George M Shelly, ex-mayor and one-time postmaster and all-around promoter of
Kansas City. While operating the store in Elk Falls, Noyes became partner to the
builder of the old Grist Mill in Elk Falls. This venture turned out to be a
mistake and almost broke the Barbers. A picture of the mill and the falls was
featured on the Elk Falls Centennial Plate in 1970.” [~ Howard Courant Citizen
article ~]
In 1880, he sold
out and was elected Clerk of the District Court and was re-elected in 1882,
being nominated both by the Republicans and Greenbackers and endorsed by the
Democrats. He owned a farm of fifty acres near Elk Falls, and had about sixty
head of cattle on the place. He was a member of the Elk Falls Lodge, No. 126,

Mar 1911. Ellen’s Barber family ancestry is unknown. They lived in Vermont and
Missouri, then Fullerton, Nance Co NE, and finally Boise ID.
Matthew bought a
law practice in Fullerton, and also was editor of the “Nance County Journal”, a
newspaper there. His son Charles Luther was assistant editor. They moved to
Boise Idaho in 1900, in a rented railroad car holding all their belongings, as
was common practice then. There he had a law practice and a job printing business.
He raised sheep nearby, a good business, but it was hurt when an inexperienced
dog ran them into a creek and about one third of them drowned.
He was a local
politician, as Precinct Committeeman, and later Chairman of the Council. He was
active in the temperance movement, and instrumental in making the local taverns
close at midnight and on Sunday. Matthew was adjutant general of the Grand Army
of the Republic, a civil war organization. He was an Elder in the Presbyterian
Church. Toward the end of his life he had “creeping palsy” and had to sleep in
a sitting position for 2 years.
Ellen was
associated with her son Charles in the Barber Plumbing Company. She was a
member of the Capital Rebekah Lodge, a conductress of the Boise Circle of the
Ladies of the G. A. R., and a member of the Women’s Relief Corps. Ellen also

In Wells County
IN Emerson and his father established a saw and grist mill in what came to be
known as the village of Barber’s Mills. Emerson was a congregational minister

that he didn’t like it, so changed course and at age 30 went to college in
Merom, Sullivan Co IN with his brother Chauncey, 7 years younger, and both
became ministers. This college was the Union Christian College, which he helped
to establish. Emerson moved to Missouri after living in Indiana from 1845 to
1865.
He was a chaplain
in Capt. Shutt’s Company, 140th Indiana Regiment in the Civil War, and was
discharged with the rank of Captain. He spent several months in the
Murfreesboro TN Hospital, March to June 1865. In Weaubleau MO he was president
of the Weaubleau Christian Institute, 1879-84, and Superintendent of Schools,
St.Clair County. In 1884 he had the town of Weaubleau surveyed and
