At Canton Henry bought the farm from his father, which he then worked.
Henry served as a New York State Assemblyman. At that time Silas WRIGHT
was Governor, and had been sheriff of St Lawrence Co. Luman MOODY was
Silas Wright's brother‑in‑law. Henry was so influenced by them that
he named a son after each. Henry was a farmer. In 1850 he was "keeper of
the jail" in Canton. During the
Civil War he was given the rank of Colonel, as a recruiting officer.
When he was in his politicking days, Henry would give parties, and at
one such, he announced an arrival by shouting
"put another pint of water in the oysters, Eunice; here come the
Smiths!" He was a Democrat, but in
later years he advised his son Henry to join the Republican Party as the party
of influence and opportunity. [~

Peter did make one try for riches, which brought only bad luck. He went
to Marysville, Yuba Co CA, and joined the "Mammoth Joint Stock Mining
Company. This company shortly went under, due to deep snow that winter, and also
due to the fact that the Secretary sold the Company and disappeared. On his
return to San Francisco, Peter was deathly ill for a while. Then a hotel in
which he was staying on the way burned, and he was lucky to get out alive, with
singed clothes and hair.
He became an architect, and was secretary of the Builders Association.
He was employed in about 1855 to build the State Capitol at Sacramento. He was
architect and superintendent of many buildings in San Francisco. He moved to
Santa Barbara in 1869, where he was Mayor in 1880 and 1890, postmaster for 5
years, and planned parts of the Plaza Del Mar, as well as many homes and
buildings there, including the court house, Santa Barbara College, the
Hospital, and the Library. He was a member of the Odd Fellows, and president of
the Ohio Society of California. [~

of Canton, Stark Co OH, b 15 Jan 1817; r Onondaga Co NY, and at Middlebury (now
part of Akron) OH.
George remained in Onondaga Co from the age of one until 21, when the
pioneer spirit overcame him, and he traveled around in Ohio, selling clocks,
finally settling in Middlebury. In 1845
he began to manufacture matches, but after a few years, he decided to give up
the struggle. He traded his business for a hotel in Middlebury, and was appointed
Postmaster. But this lasted only a year
when he went back to the match business. This business gradually grew and
prospered, becoming the largest match manufacturing business in the area. In
1864 the business became the Barber Match Company, with George the President,
and his son Ohio C the Secretary and Treasurer, and his future son‑in‑law
John K Robinson General Agent. By 1881 they had the largest match company in
the country. They then merged with 27 other match companies to form the Diamond
Match Company, with his son Ohio C Barber the Vice‑president. [~ History

Ohio began his business career early in
life, when at the age of 16 he went on the road, to promote his father's
match business. In 1862 he became manager of
the business. In 1865 it was organized into the Barber Match
Company. In 1881 it was consolidated with
others into the Diamond Match Company, and he became President of
this. He was also president of the National
Sewer Pipe Company at Barberton, Summit Co OH, the Paige Tube Co,
Warren, Trumbull Co OH, the Neracher
Automatic Sprinkler Co, Warren, the Creedmoor Cartridge Co, Barberton,
the Sterling Boiler Company, Barberton, and

of Concord, Lake Co OH, b probably

RUST; r Painesville, Lake Co OH.
In his youth, Sanford nearly lost his life
in June 1858, when he, his older brother Dwight, and an old man were out
on Lake Erie fishing. A storm came up
suddenly. They lost an oar, and were helpless against the wind. They
shipped water and bailed for over 24 hours
before a schooner sighted them and they were rescued. When they finally returned home, after about
3 days, they found that they were in time to stop preparations for
their funerals, which were underway.
In 1862 at age 16 Sanford joined Company M,
2nd Ohio Heavy Artillery, and fought with the Union Army at the
Battle of Knoxville, and in the fighting from
there to Chattanooga. He and 4 of his brothers fought in the Civil War.
Two of them were killed.
After the War, Sanford worked as a Railroad
brakeman and conductor until about 1885. He then was elected to 3
terms as the City Marshal of Painesville, and
in 1892 was elected Sheriff of Lake Co. He was a Republican. [~ CT
