Harlow m/2 14 Oct 1834 Sophronia C CASE, b Simsbury CT 7 Oct
1786, d Larwill 26 May 1883 “age 96 y, 7 mo, 21 d”, older sister of Elsie, and
12 years older than Harlow. Sophronia was the widow of Harlow’s uncle Roswell
(she was Roswell’s second wife). The Case family moved from Simsbury to Loudon
MA when Sophronia was 8 years old.
Before her death, Elsie made Sophronia promise to assume the care of her
children, and made Harlow and Sophronia promise to marry within a reasonable
time. In 1830 the census shows Sophronia in Sheldon in her 40’s with an older
woman in her 60’s, and 1 girl b 1815-20, and 1 girl b 1820-25. Before his
marriage, Harlow spent a year helping his uncle Israel Barber near the
Okefenokee Swamp in southern Georgia. Israel was a cattle dealer at the time.
Then after their marriage, they lived to the south of Barber Hill, in Sheldon,
Genesee Co NY (after 1843 in Wyoming Co) until 1839, when Harlow and his second
wife moved to Troy, Whitley Co IN.
Harlow moved in 1839 with his wife and 5 sons, sailing from Buffalo to
Toledo on the “Commodore Perry”, and then down the Maumee River on a flatboat
to Ft. Wayne. From there the journey was completed on foot. In Troy he built a
log cabin and cleared the land. In 1852 he sold out and bought a new farm, later
occupied by his son Frederick B. Still later he lived in Richland, in the
Larwill section. Harlow was a mason by trade. Sophronia was a teacher from age
15 to 30, when she married, and also helped support the family by weaving. She
and Harlow joined the Methodist Church in Troy in 1840. For the last 12 years
of her life, Sophronia lived with her stepson Winfield S. [~

Sep 1830 Myranda Orilla BUTLER, b Wyndham, Greene Co NY 10 Apr 1811, d Silver Lake 8 Dec 1886,
daughter of Stephen and Sabrina (SANFORD) BUTLER.
Milo learned to be a tanner in Connecticut, at age 18. He then worked in
Newark NJ for a time, and next went to Greene Co NY before age 30. He and
Myranda moved to Kosciusko Co IN in 1838, along with his sister Nancy and
brother Myron; he brought his wife and 4 children and all their worldly
possessions by ox team, in one load. He built a cabin on 80 acres, cleared the
land, and farmed. He was a great hunter and trapper. He was associated with
William Thorne in the fur business. This was profitable enough to allow Milo to
buy another 80 acres. The family lived in Franklin, Koscusko Co in 1850; in
Seward (Silver Lake) in 1860 and after.
Milo was the first trustee of
Seward Township, 1859 - 1864.
According to a biographical sketch they had 18 children, including 3
sets of twins. 6 of the sons served in the Civil War. Milo told of hearing the
cannons in New Orleans in the War of 1812, when he was 9 years old. He was
active in the “Underground Railroad”, to help slaves escape to their
freedom. [~

Aug 1849; m in Delaware Co OH, about 1818 Sarah Elizabeth VINING, b
Delaware Co 16 Feb 1802, of a Scottish family, d Barber’s Mills 4 Jan 1861.
When he was young, Hallett’s family went to Vermont for a while, and then back
to New York State. At age 18 Hallett walked to the area of Franklin and
Delaware Counties, Ohio.
In 1829 he entered the ministry. In about 1838 he moved his family from
Nimmous Cross Roads, Delaware Co to Darke Co OH. He was to buy land, clear it
and sell it for profit, thus financing his church work. He organized the Six
Mile Church, a New Lighthouse Christian Church (now part of the United Church
of Christ), in 1838, near Bluffton in Wells Co IN.
A few years later they moved again, to Wells County IN, where with his
son Emerson, Hallett built the first water-powered grist mill in Wells County.
That area is still known as Barber’s Mills. Barber’s Mills was the original
name of Rockford, Wells Co. In his career as a minister, Hallett cleared farms
in four different places, formed a riding circuit, with churches he planted in
OH and IN. He started the Bluffton Conference of Christian Churches, and was
early a part of the Eel River Conference of the Christian Church. In 1849 he
came to the aid of a neighbor suffering from cholera, unfortunately contracted
the disease himself, and died of it.

Hannah Waterbury, age 61, and Samuel Waterbury, age 62. Elisha went with the
Solomon Waterbury family to Sumter WI to homestead, and bought land next to
them.
They both started building houses. Some of the walls were of brick. When
Elisha was working on his by himself, a wall collapsed, killing him. Emeline
then moved out to WI with her 3 daughters.
The first, Mary Jane, married George F HOUGHTON, one was a

Sarah’s grandfather Peter Cooke WATERBURY was from Connecticut.
He was a loyalist, and tried to escape with his family to Nova Scotia during
the Revolution. They made it as far as St John, New Brunswick. Eventually
Solomon’s family made its way back to the U.S, to Massena NY, where Elisha W
