In about 1830 Buckley was growing tobacco, and tried a variety called

into an ideal “binder”, the part of the cigar that directly surrounds the
bunched-up filler leaf, and lies beneath the outer shade-grown outer leaf.
Connecticut Valley Broadleaf became famous and still is.
Buckley first was a merchant at Warehouse Point. At his father's death
in 1839 Buckley took over the Barber Distillery, which he later transferred to
his two sons. He served one term in the Legislature (1858), and contributed
freely to promote the public welfare. [~ 1909 Barber Gen; Barbour
