Noyes m/2 Ledyard CT 11 Aug 1814 Widow Mary
(CHESTER) SMITH, b 1780, d 12 Oct 1848, daughter of Starr and
Mary (MORGAN) CHESTER, and widow of Elijah SMITH.
From the age of 11 Noyes was a clerk for
William ELDRIDGE, a merchant in Groton. At age 21 he bought and took
over the store. He expanded into farm supplies, becoming the largest dealer in
a wide area. Also he bought and shipped farm produce, to various places
including the West Indies. Noyes took part in the War of 1812, in which he was
a Captain in the 8th Regiment of Volunteers. On the 10th of August, 1814, his
troops were called to defend Stonington from British attack. This happened to
be the day on which he and Mary had planned to be married. So the wedding took
place on August 11th instead.
Noyes was a lawyer by profession, but had a
lot of other interests as well. He was elected to the Connecticut Legislature
for 2 terms, and then in 1821 he won election to the U S Congress, where he
remained in office for 14 years. This was the longest any Connecticut
congressman had served, up to that time. He was in the Federal Republican
Party, and so when the Jackson Democrats became popular, Noyes was retired, and
returned to Groton and to his mercantile pursuits. On 25 Feb 1825 while he was
a Congressman, the U.S Congress passed a bill granting him a bounty on the
fishing schooner “Lucy Anne”, which perhaps was captured from the British in
the War of 1812.(?)

Delaware Co NY Delilah ‑‑‑, b MA 1 Oct 1788, d Reading 6 Jan
1865; r Penfield, Monroe Co NY, Townsend, Huron Co OH, and Reading MI.
According to the family, Abijah was the only
brother who succeeded in paying off his farm in Townsend. This was because his
father helped him, probably by using his Revolutionary War Pension. He and his
brother Hezekiah were elders in their church, the “Peace Baptist Church”. In Penfield Abijah was at times election
clerk, trustee, and treasurer during the 1820’s.
In 1836 his family went to Hillsdale Co in
Michigan. It was Abijah who was the first of the Barber brothers to go there.
Hezekiah and his family followed, and the other brothers remained in Ohio.
Several other families who were associated in the Church with the Barbers
migrated there at the same time, from Ohio. Abijah bought 40 acres in the
Perrinburg section of Camden, Hillsdale Co, later known as “The Berg”. By 1840
Abijah and his wife were living in Reading with his son Levi. Delilah was
living with her son Levi in 1860. [~

CASE, b Simsbury 26 Jun 1746, d Claremont NH 1818, daughter of Judge John
and Esther (HUMPHREYS) OWEN. Chloe's first husband was John CASE,
and she had 3 children by him: John, Desire, and Chloe. Daniel and Chloe lived
in Simsbury until about 1781. He was a
soldier in the Revolution, and served two terms in the Continental Army.
Daniel Barber was ordained as an Episcopal
Clergyman in 1787, and began his preaching in Manchester VT about 1787, where
he remained thru 1794. At the end of this time he was Secretary of Vermont’s
Episcopal Convention. Then Daniel preached in Claremont NH for 24 years. As an
Episcopal minister in Claremont, Daniel knew Dr. PENNIMAN there, who had
married the widow of Ethan ALLEN of Vermont “Green Mountain Boys” fame.
In 1807 Rev. BARBER baptised into his Episcopal faith Fanny ALLEN,
Ethan's daughter, who was headed for school in Montreal to learn French. This
was in order to keep her from becoming a Catholic when exposed to the Nuns
there. However, this didn't work, apparently, because later, in 1808, she did
enter a convent. She had discussions about this with Rev. BARBER, who
opposed her plans. But he became interested in Catholicism in this way, and
after over 30 years in the Episcopal Church, Daniel converted to the Catholic
faith in 1818, the same year his wife died, and four years after his son Virgil
had converted to Catholicism. Bishop Cheverus, a priest in Boston, also had much
to do with this conversion - visited Daniel and left books for him and his
family to read. This conversion of the Barber family, with its strict Puritan
background, was one of the most notable and far-reaching in its results of any
recorded in the annals of the Church in New England.
At that time he gave his estate to the
Catholic Church. Daniel then led, he said, "a kind of pilgrimage state of
life, wandering from place to place, depending entirely upon the hospitality
and charity of the pious, the generous, and the humane". He lived in
Boston MA, Baltimore MD, Georgetown DC, Frederick County MD, and ended up in
Washington DC. He wrote "History of My Own Times", which includes an
account of early Simsbury. [~ 1909 Barber Gen; Land

Virgil was first trained as an Episcopal Clergyman. He was first
at missions in Claremont NH, and Indian Old Town,
Maine, and officiated as priest in Episcopal Churches in Cheshire
CT and Waterbury CT. In 1814 both he and his
wife converted to Catholicism. He passed his noviceship at
Georgetown University in Washington DC. He became a Roman Catholic Priest, in the
Society of Jesus, and was ordained in 1822.
In 1814 he was made
Principal in a Herkimer County NY Trinity Episcopal Church at
Fairfield, near Utica, but after about 2 years it was
ascertained that he had changed his religious preference and so he
was dismissed by the Trustees. Later Virgil was
in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Washington DC. He visited Rome to
make arrangements to provide for his wife and
children. He was a man of profound learning and culture, being
able to speak 7 languages.
Jerusha became a nun, called sister Mary Augustine, and entered
the Visitation Convent in 1818 with her 4
daughters. She was head of education there. She started a new
Convent at Kaskaskia, Randolph Co IL in 1836,
mainly to train teachers. Still later she started a Convent in St
Louis MO, 1844‑1848, and after that one in Mobile AL, where she spent the rest of her life.
Each of their children also became involved with the Church as a
way of life, and never married. [~

Jared served in the Revolution. At one point
during this service he held the ink stand into which General Washington dipped
his pen in signing the order for the execution of Major Andre. The family moved
from Connecticut to Sheldon just after 1800. They cleared a farm there. A
nearby mound is now known as Barber Hill. I believe that Eunice went to Elba in

ISRAEL6 BARBER
(Daniel5), b Simsbury CT 12 May 1765; d 1834;
m 1801 ‑‑‑; r Simsbury until 1786, then at sea in 1786-1787,
in Augusta GA 1787-1788, in Screven Co GA 1789-1800, in Tatnall Co GA
1801-1805, and in Camden (now Charlton) Co GA, on a plantation near the St
Mary's River, after 1805. He received 600 acres of land in Screven Co in 1799,
and in 1816-1818 he received 650 acres in Camden Co.
Israel must have been a restless soul. A
letter from him to his brother Daniel, dated 1 Jan 1810, details his life
story. Apparently his Uncle Thomas Barber in Simsbury caused Israel to leave
there because of Uncle’s “rascality”. Israel went to sea at the age of 21, in
the Sloop “Commerce”, which had a route between New Haven CT, Jamaica, and
Savannah GA. This proved to be more of an adventure than expected, for they
suffered a gale for nine days, which blew them off course to “Bermooda”, where
they nearly perished on the rocks.
Shortly thereafter the sloop was captured by
a British Sloop of War. Israel was held prisoner for a while and then freed in
Savannah. There he shipped aboard a Scotch brig. The Captain was “unsufferable”
in conduct, feeding the crew very little and beating them without cause. A few
months later when the brig reached Savannah the Scotch Captain “departed this
life suddenly, to our great joy”. The crew helped to bury him and then went to
the grog shop and “spent the remainder of the day drinking his health.”
Israel spent a year in Augusta, and then 10
years, probably in Screven Co Georgia. In about 1800 he traveled to the
Altamaha River, probably Tatnall Co, where he “bought a stock of cattle and
some Negroes, and set up a small store of groceries.” In 1801 he met and
married the daughter of a planter who lived along the St Mary's River in Camden
Co, (in what is now Charlton Co) Georgia. At that time the whole area below the
Altamaha was called Guale, and served as a neutral zone between the English
above the Altamaha, and the Spanish in Florida. Israel settled in 1806 as (he claimed) “the first white settler
on the north edge of the Okefenokee Swamp”. He stated he was 5 miles from the
Spanish line, East Florida. Also he was 43 miles from St Marys, and 8 miles
from the “Indian line”.
Israel raised a family, and became a man of
wealth, owning in 1810 1000 head of cattle, 300 hogs, 3 good horses, 9 slaves,
and a good plantation. There he raised corn, cattle and rice. In 1809, after being cut off from his family
for many years, one of his letters was answered by his brother Daniel. He was
so overjoyed to hear about all his family, that he “killed the fattings of my
flocks and made a great feast”, which lasted 2 days. After a 30 years absence,
he visited his New England boyhood scenes, but then returned to Georgia.
In 1817 Indians drove off 200 head of his
cattle. This was part of troubles which eventually led to the first Seminole
War.
In the years about 1825-30 there was an
ongoing dispute between Florida and Georgia as to the boundary, in the region
of the St Mary’s River and the Okefenokee Swamp, where Georgia dips down into
Florida. In 1831 a committee was named to establish the official boundary. Israel and his son Obediah were hired as
guides in this project. Israel was later a “short-time resident” of Baker and
of Nassau Counties in Florida. [~

i GRANDISON7, ; m 1828 Sarah HAWTHORNE. In the
days of the border dispute between Florida and Georgia,
Grandison “wore out his cart and his wife” moving back and forth
between Ware Co GA and Columbia Co (now Baker
Co) FL. Every time the
political climate changed and Georgia claimed this part of Florida, Grandison
would move
down into it, but later when the political tide turned against
Georgia, Grandison would move back up, because he
would be “damned to hell rather than live in Florida”. When the
State Line was finally established, Grandison built a
house on this Line, one half of the house in each state.
At this time he was doing some business on
the sly, namely cattle-rustling, and when things got too hot for him and
the Sheriff came out, he would move to the other side of his
house, into the next state, to avoid arrest. This worked
for a while, until the fateful day when both Sheriffs showed up at
the same time!

b MA 1 Oct 1772; d Middlebury NY 13 Jul 1866, daughter of Bela and Priscilla (NEWLAND)
CASWELL; r Middletown Springs. Middletown was established in 1784, and
Russell came soon after it was organized, with the Caswells, Leaches, and
others.
There was a memorable flood in the town on
July 22, 1811, which is described by his then young children, Priscilla and
Jarvis. He was an active man in the community, but poor health kept him home
the latter part of his life. Russell served in the War of 1812, in Capt. Wood’s
Company, toward the end of the hostilities, in Plattsburgh NY. [~ 1909

will, Harriet left property to 8 children of Lemuel HURLBURT, and
"to 2 daughters of herself and Mr. COLLINS".
Calvin's widowed mother was reduced to
poverty, partly because the Continental money depreciated badly. This made it
necessary for Calvin to be "bound out" to his brother‑in‑law
Jacob PETTIBONE to learn the trade of mason and stone‑cutter. He
educated himself while in training and became a successful teacher. He had to
borrow money for his wedding clothes, he was so poor. His wife's family wasn't
much better off, but she and Calvin had much enthusiasm and spirit to carry
them through to better times.
In 1802 Calvin contracted with the State of
Connecticut to rebuild the old "Newgate" prison at the Simsbury Copper
mines. When he finished, the walls were of solid masonry 10 or 12 feet high. A
big celebration was held and even the prisoners were allowed to
participate. For many years he
was an active magistrate, and was known to be a terror to evil‑doers. [~ 1909 Barber Gen.; Barbour

Lucius graduated from Amherst College, Amherst MA in 1826, earned
an M.A. degree in 1829, and received his
M.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania Medical Department
in 1833. He located first in the
then small city of Milwaukee, but after a few years, he settled at
Jefferson. Although he practiced medicine for a few
years, from 1835 to 1839, he preferred politics. He became speaker
of the house in the first assembly of the
Wisconsin legislature in 1839. Also he became Clerk of the U S
District Court of Jefferson County from 1840 to
1845.
In 1846, after the family tragedies of the year before, Lucius
returned to Simsbury to a life of farming. He was one
of the best‑known men of Simsbury, known for his many
anecdotes and genial disposition. He was elected to the
Connecticut General Assembly in 1850, and became a Probate Judge
in Simsbury, a position which he held from
1858 to 1868.
Lucius spent many years researching the history of Simsbury, but
did not finish writing it up by the time of his
death.
He left valuable manuscripts. He wrote "A Record and
Documentary History of Simsbury".
Abigail was active
socially, and in church work, and in the Daughters of the American

Elisha derives his middle name WESTOVER
from his father’s maternal grandmother, Mary WESTOVER, daughter of Jonah

Elisha was the first schoolteacher in Chase
Mills in 1808/9, and was elected an assessor in 1808. He is found in the 1810
census of Messina, St Lawrence Co. In 1820 he was in Louisville, near to Chase
Mills, and 1830 finds him in the Norfolk, St Lawrence Co census, also near
Chase Mills. In 1838 Elisha W and Abigail removed from membership in the First
Presbyterian Congregational Church of Norfolk. Elisha was one of the original
members at the founding of the Church in 1828.
