SGT. EMANUEL CUSTER - Emanuel served in the Revolutionary War when he was twenty-two. He was a sergeant in Captain John Edward's Company of the Philadelphia County Militia, 5th Battalion, commanded by Colonel John Bull. His name appears on the Captain Edward's muster roll dated 10 December 1776.

PVT. JOHN FRIEND - Skipton Company. Buried in the Friend graveyard at Friendsville, Md. He has a government marker. Was born in 1732 and was still living in June 1838. He was allotted Military Lots Nos. 3281, 3281, 3283, which included his settlement on the Youghiogheny. He married Kerrenhappuch Hyatt in Virginia. She died October 13, 1798. Was allotted Military Lots #3281, 3283; data received from DAR of Youghiogheny.

REG. WILLIAM PRICE - (1778-1779 & 1782) Capt. Child’s Company, 10 Regiment North Carolina line. Also, Capt. Bacot’s Company, North Carolina line.

LT. GABRIEL FRIEND (1752-1854) - Sandy Creek Rangers. Buried in the Friend graveyard at Friendsville, Md. He has a family marker as well as a government marker. He married (1) Elizabeth Bonnell in 1787 and (2) Clara Ann Peck in 1810. SGT ABIJAH HERRINGTON - Sandy Creek Rangers. Probably resided on Herrington Run in the Glades. A government marker was ordered for Abijah Herrington in June 1968 and received. It was erected in May, 1977 at the entrance to Herrington Manor State Park.

CAPT. AUGUSTINE FRIEND - Served in the Sandy Creek Rangers, Buried at McHenry. But the Deep Creek Lake now covers his grave. His father, Nicholas, was also buried there. Miss Josie Weimer can remember the cemetery and recalled that as a young girl she had played in and around it. Her mother was Martha Friend, daughter of Israel Friend and Dorcas Willison.

Harper's Ferry, W. Va., September, 1862. Annapolis (Md.) 8th Army Corps to July, 1863. 3rd Separate Brigade, 8th Army Corps, to October, 1863. 1st Separate Brigade, 8th Army Corps, to July, 1864. Kenly's Independent Brigade, 6th Army Corps, Army of the Shenandoah, to August, 1864. Kenly's Brigade, Reserve Division, West Virginia, to October, 1864. The 3d Regiment of Potomac Home Brigade Infantry was transferred to the Middle Department in June, 1862, and on September 13, 1862, formed a part of the beleaguered garrison at Harper's Ferry, Va., and were actively engaged during all the fighting incident to the siege on the 13th, 14th and 15th days of September, 1862, both on Maryland Heights, Md., and Bolivar Heights, Va.

The 3d Regiment Potomac Home Brigade Infantry was surrendered with the garrison and paroled when duly exchanged. They were assigned to duty guarding the line of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.

On the invasion of Maryland by General Early's Confederate Army in July, 1864, the 3d Regiment Potomac Home Brigade Infantry confronted their advance, and had a lively and gallant skirmish with the enemy to the west of Frederick City, Md., July 7th and 8th, 1864, and took a conspicuous part with General Lew Wallace's little army at the battle of Monocacy, July 9, 1864, where this small army was ordered to give battle to overwhelming force of the enemy, in order to enable reinforcements to reach and protect the Capitol at Washington.

Regiment lost during service 1 Officer and 8 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 1 Officer and 73 Enlisted men by disease. Total 83.

Emanuel was the son of David Custer and Margaret Stark.
