Ira served directly with Emanuel Custer, III in the Potomac Home Brigade. He enlisted as a Private and was discharged at the rank of Sgt. Date of Enlistment or Muster In: April 3, 1865, Date of Muster Out or Discharge: May 29, 1865. Ira was the son of Cornelius Ward Friend & Sarah Alice Kemp and he was the brother of William H. H. Friend.  Ira's physical description was that he had black eyes and black hair.  He stood 6' 1".  He was listed as a farmer and was 34 years old at time of enlistment.  Records also show he was captured at Harper's Ferry on September 15th, 1862 then paroled September 16th 1862.

Enlisted, at the age of 22 years, in Oakland, Maryland in January 1862 for the duration of 3 years. Contracted Typhoid Fever and was deemed mentally unfit for service.   At the time of enlistment, Francis was 38 years old, was 5 ft. 7 in. tall, and had a dark complexion, dark eyes and dark hair. He listed his occupation as a farmer.
