TILLEY FAMILY

From Sussex England

This page is a work in progress, if you find mistakes or would like to add information about any member of the Tilley family please contact me.

Information on the Tilley family is from my own research & information shared with me by Marg Andrews, Debbie Van Corlor and David Cripps

John Tilley 1755

& Charlotte Boxall

Born: JOHN TILLEY baptised 10 Oct 1756 St Peters Lodsworth in Sussex, England, possibly the son of John Tilley who died 1790 Lodsworth Sussex.

Marriage: John married CHARLOTTE BOXALL on 24th July 1781 in Lodsworth England, Witnesses John Shepherd & John Goodner.

Wife Born: Charlotte was baptised 17 June 1764 St Peters in Sussex, the daughter of Edward Boxall & Ann Baker (m. 29 Nov 1742 Woolbeding)

Life of Crime: John Tilley and several of his children faced criminal charges and sentences as thieves and thugs. Was this a bad streak born and bred into them? I'd like to think their behaviour was the result of the desperate need to survive in the poor conditions of England during these early times. .

Offence 3rd Dec. 1806: John was charge of being a *rogue & vagabond he was committed of this offence by I. Napper.

* A vagabond is a (generally impoverished) itinerant person. Such people may be called tramps, rogues, or hobos. A vagabond is characterized by almost continuous travelling, lacking a fixed home, temporary abode, or permanent residence. Vagabonds are not bums, as bums are not known for traveling but preferring to stay in one location

Death: Charlotte died c.1846 Midhurst District Sussex

Death: John died c.1850 Midhurst Sussex England.

Edward's life on the wrong side of the law: Edward had been in and out of goals on at least three occasions and escaped from another, Petworth Goal. He had used name aliases of Boxall (his mothers maiden name) and King. His final thieving spree in Sussex saw him and his brother John being convicted and sentenced to 7 years transportation to be served in Tasmania Australia after being caught poaching pheasants on the Duke of Richmond's Estate. The Tilley brothers were transported to Tasmania aboard the ship "Chapman" in 1824.

Below is a time line of Edward's escapades:

1817:  Poaching: In 1817 Edward a sawyer aged 24yrs was tried for poaching, He was found on the property of the Earl of Egmont in the Parish of Petworth armed with a crossbow. His description in 1817 says that he was 5ft 5in, straight build, a fair complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes and round face. Sentance 4 months in Petworth Prison.

1821: Assault: Edward Tilley came before the Quarter Sessions Court in Petworth January 1821, when he was tried for assualting an old man, Sentance 2 months Petworth. 1822: Simple Grand Larceny, 22nd May, 1822. Proceedings of Old Bailey Court, trial of Robert Coombs & Thomas Razell: On the 13th February 1822. Edward was involved with these two men in stealing 20 dozen (200 lbs.) of candles, the goods of James Shotter a tallow-chandler. (Read how they stole the candles by going to the link below.)  Edward's share of the candles was about 40lbs. In cross examination Edward admitted he knew  Robert Coombs & Thomas Razell and admitted that his wife Elizabeth had collected the candle haul from where they had been stashed away. Edward was apprehended about nine weeks after the robbery, and six or seven of the shoemaker's candles were found at his house.

Personal questions asked of Edward in cross examination were as follows:

Q. How old are you -

A. Thirty. I live at Kingston, in Caroline-place. My father is in Sussex. I have been in Petworth Gaol. I have five brothers, one of them is in Horsemonger-lane, and one in Newgate.

Q. How many gaols have you been in -

A. About three. I cannot tell how many robberies I have been engaged in. I have gone by the names of Boxall, and King. I once escaped from an officer. I was in the cage when I told of this robbery.

Q. How often did the Magistrate persuade you, before you mentioned the prisoners names -

A. I mentioned it at first.

Q. How often in the month of February had you crossed Bushey Park -

A. Only this once, I think. The watchman had no lantern that I saw.

Q. Are you the man who broke out of Petworth Goal -

A. Yes; I was not re-taken, I went about the country.

Q. Thieving -

A. Yes.

D'Entrecasteaux's Channel called Three Hut Point, became important for shipping between Hobart and the coastal bases of whalers, sealers and timber-getters further south.

Below is an extract from the article made by David Cripps:

Besides Mr Tilley, the owner, there were in the boat Mr J. Leyson, (who came to the colony second officer of the Sarah, Capt King), 3 of Tilley's labourers, namely, Joseph James, John Perry and John Dale, a female named Ann Harwood, and a lad whose name we have not been able to learn, who arrived lately by the Southworth".

"Soon after the vessel had entered the channel, when she was about two miles from the shore, squall overtook her, and from fatal neglect in not letting go the foresheet at the approach of the squall, she was driven on her beam ends, and every one on board thrown on the mercy of the waves". "All, however, except the female who sunk with the schooner, and Leyson, succeeded in getting into a small boat which was towing at the stern of the other, but distressing to relate, owing to the rope which made it fast not being cut or disentangled in time, the boat also was dragged to the bottom when the other vessel sunk". "All who were able to swim then tried to make towards the shore, but none, it appears, succeeded in arriving at it, except Leyson alone, who making the land much exhausted near Mr Kelly's farm, was kindly recruited by that gentleman's servants and also by Mr Pybus who sent him up in his boat to town, where he made the sad recital to the above effect before the Chief Police Magistrate".

1831 Owner-Master of a Trading Scooner: Infomation from book Shipwrecks of Tasmania: Unidentified (no name of boat). 1831. River craft,  trading schooner, about 10 tons. Owner-master Edward Tilley.  Out of Hobart for Three Hut Point on the D’Entrecasteaux Channel to load timber, capsized in a squall, 5 May 1831. Seven drowned, one male passenger managed to swim the two miles to safety. [TS1]

1831+: Elizabeth "Ann" Tilley seems to have had a defacto relationship with John Tilley (Edward's brother) after her husband's death in 1831, John & Ann had a daughter Rosanna Mary. Rosanna's father was John Tilley [see John Tilley's Will of 1855 most of his estate was left to Rosanna].

1848: Death of Elizabeth: 10 Dec 1848 Hobart reg no. 2190 rdg no. 35. The informant at time of Elizabeth 'Ann" Tilley's death was her son Edward Tilley.

1848: At time of her death in 1848 Ann was calling herself a Licensed Victualler's wife.

Obituary: Mercury Newspaper 29 Oct 1855 Hobart, Tasmania Local Intelligence:

Fatal Whaling Accident - Mr George Chase, who left this port about 5 weeks ago, in the Highlander, for the Whale Fishery arrived in town on Thursday evening with the melancholy intelligence of the loss of three lives on Port Davey on Sunday last, (yesterday week). The boat, manned with six men had made fast to a Black Fish, when by some derangement of the line, the boat went down, when Mr. Tilley, young Mr Robert Jeffries, and a seaman whose name is not at present known, were unfortunately drowned. The boat we understand was no great distance from the vessel, and we need not add that Captain Chase and his crew rendered every and most prompt assistance, but succeeded in rescuing only three of the men. Mr. Tilley, who was son-in-law to Mr. James Wiggins of this City has left a Widow and 5 young children, and young Jeffries was much respected by many friends".
