WILLIAM THOMAS KESTERSON & FAMILY
"The Iowa Branch"

Actually there were "two" branchs of the Kesterson line that settled in the same area of Iowa. They spent a lot of time back in the old days trying to figure out how they were related, but it wasn't unti the mid 1970's that we finally were able to prove the connection. The first group to arrive here around 1844, was William Thomas Kesterson and his wife Hannah M. Ulred. William was the son of Sylvester Welch & Elizabeth (Johnson) Kesterson. I believe Sylvester was born in Augusta VA and he was the son of John Kesterson born 4 of December 1842 in Northumberland Co VA. As best as any of can determine John deserted his wife and children in Augusta VA sometime before 1809 because we found a e license for this particular John and Elizabeth Bollen in Jefferson County OH. We were able to tie John back to the family in Augusta VA by a will he left in Jefferson OH where he named each child - leaving them $1.00 "if they so desired". There were no children between Elizabeth Bollen and John. John's first wife is believed ot be Elizabeth Rebecca Whitman whom he married 29 November 1783 in Rockingham County VA. Through the various census records its is seen that "Rebecca" Kesterson, always a widow was in close proximity to all of the known children that John named in his will. They were --

Benjamin Kesterson b about 1784 - Married Elizabeth Nancy Wood
Sylvester Welch Kesterson b April 1785 married Elizabeth Johnson. Settled in Anderson Co TN
Hazzard Kesterson born about 1787 married Elizabeth Grass. Settled around Hamilton Co TN
Willis Kesterson born 12 Feb 1792 married Catherine Gregory. Remained in VA
Jenny Kesterson born about 1794
Nancy Kesterson born 1796 married Jesse Wood
Sarah Kesterson born 1798

The second group to arive was the family of Charles Kesterson. Click on his name and you can read all about this family. Charles and his first wife Mary A. Dunnigan left middle TN with their young family in 1854, but Mary did not survive the trip. She is buried on the River bank (we think on the Illinois side). Charles continued his migration to Iowa with his young children and eventually married again to Elizabeth Brooks.

Corrine (Jeffres) Kesterson
Wife of Robert Cary Kesterson
On May 6, 2005, the Lord accepted another Angel into His loving embrace. Beloved Mother, Grandma, Sister, Caregiver and Friend, Corrinne "Corky" M. Kesterson, 78, passed away with family around her, if not in person, forever in spirit and heart. In honor of Corky's wishes, she was cremated with no services. There will be a memorial luncheon held May 27, 2005, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at her home, 113 Lynn Lane, Grand Island, where she lived with her daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Bill Bottolfson, and her granddaughter, Jamie Peterson. We want to welcome family and friends during this time to celebrate her life and to share memories of the beautiful woman she was. Corky was born Nov. 12, 1926, to Floyd and Willamena "Mena" Jeffres at Scotia. She attended school in Greeley and Scotia, where she graduated in 1944. She worked through her high school years at the Scotia Cafi. Corky married Maurice "Morry" Johnson in 1944, and had five children. In addition to being a full-time wife and mother, Corky also found time to work on the family dairy, drive school bus for several years and work at the Scotia Cafi throughout the marriage. And if all that wasn't enough, she also always put a home-cooked meal on the table. Corky moved to Grand Island in 1973, and worked at Delicious Foods and the Nebraska Veterans Home for two years until an injury to her back forced her to change her line of work. Corky married again to Robert C. Kesterson in 1976. During this marriage Corky worked at the Goodrich Dairy Store until the latter part of 1980, at which time she moved to Washington State to be closer to her family. She worked on a dairy, milking cows, and also drove a gravel truck until her return to Grand Island a year later. Corky then drove and tended the Goodrich Dairy Mobile Store, delivering and selling Goodrich Dairy products to surrounding towns and communities, until forced to retire early due to serious arthritic problems.

Corky spent her retirement years creating beautiful crafts. Crochet and Counted Cross Stitch were her specialties. Some of her Cross Stitch work can be seen from coast to coast in the form of wedding pillows. Corky was an avid reader, enjoyed Nebraska football and particularly enjoyed spending time with her family. In her younger years, Corky loved bowling, cooking, canning and baking. Corky is survived by three sons and a daughter-in-law, Bradley K. Johnson of Phoenix, Terrance "Terry" M. Johnson of Centralia, Wash., Douglas "Doug" F. and Kim Johnson of Onalaska, Wash., and a daughter and son-in-law, Tammy M. and Bill Bottolfson of Grand Island. 12 grandchildren and three stepgrandsons, 10 great-grandchildren, soon to be 11, 11 stepgrandchildren, and a great-great-grandson, a special "adopted" grandson and a special "adopted" great-granddaughter. Two sisters and a brother-in-law, Gayle and Floyd Wilson of Elba and Caroljean Samway of Grand Island, a brother and sister-in-law, Donald "Mick" and Rose Jeffres of Burwell, and a sister-in-law, Mavis Jeffres of Grand Island. Corky was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son, Dennis Dean Johnson, husband Robert, a brother, DeLysle "Jeff" Jeffres and a sister, Darlene Brinkley. Memorials are suggested to the family or the donor's choice with special consideration given to the Hospice Program or Midland Area Agency on Aging. When he was about four years of age his parents moved to Ohio, and here on a farm, he grew to manhood. With his parents he came to Mills County, all traveling overland in wagons. They settled in the southwest part of the county in the fall of 1856, the year of Buchanan's election to the Presidency.

A PIONEER MINISTER GOES TO FINAL REST

Robert Hunt Kesterson Labored For His Master Thru Joy and Sorrow The funeral services of Robert Kesterson were Friday afternoon at 2:30 at the Methodist church with the Rev. Orville Howard officiating. A quartette composed of Miss Alice Rhode, Mr. F. L. McCormick, Harold Greenlee and H. W. Parkinson, with Miss Grace Sharpe as accompanist, sang "Rock of Ages", "Face to Face", and Mrs. McCormick the solo, Beautiful Land". The pall bearers were Joshua Hayter, John Merritt, George Garrett, C.C. Ward, James Chambers and Henry Hubbard. There were many relatives and friends present from Glenwood [Iowa]; Mr. and Mrs. John Stewart, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Haines and son, Malvern; Mr. and Mrs. Rogers, Mr. and Mrs. Williams and the three Fierp Brothers from Rosehill, near Clarinda; Mrs. Hazel Bettison and Dickey from Omaha.

Rev. Robert Hunt Kesterson, son of William and Hannah Kesterson, was born in Cole County, Missouri, January 25, 1850, and departed this life January 26, 1927, at his home 8 miles south of Glenwood, Iowa, at the age of 76 years, 11 months and 10 days. At the age of 2 years, he came with his parents to what is known as the William Kesterson homestead 2-1/4 miles north-west of Tabor where he grew to manhood. At the age of about 19 years, he was converted in a revival meeting at the Waubonsie church, conducted by W. E. Hamilton, and soon felt the call to the ministry of the gospel, to which he faithfully responded. But, feeling the need of a companion in his Christian warfare, he found one well-fitted for such a position in the person of Miss Mary Wolfe, to whom he was married March 28, 1872. To this happy union three children were born, Miss Lilly Hood of High River, Alberta, Canada, Charles of near Tabor, and Mrs. Alice Stewart of Pacific Junction. "Brother Rob's" friends were numbered by his acquaintances, because of his kindness and love for man-kind and was widely known, having preached in various churches in Mills County and held several pastoral charges in Southwestern Iowa. The winter weather was never too cold, or the summer too hot, or the roads too muddy for him to fill his appointments. He felt his duty in his ministerial work just as other men do in their vocations. Putting it in his own words, he "went into it for all there was in it". He had always been a strong, rugged man until about 3 years ago, when his health began to fail while on the Talmage charge. He resigned and returned with his wife to their farm home to recuperate and to be near their children. Partially recovering, he did not feel satisfied to be idle, so he accepted the pastorate at the Pleasant Ridge U.B. church which he served until his illness of about two months duration, during which time loving hands did all that was possible to relieve his suffering, till the Death Angel came across the threshold and bore his spirit back to the God who gave it. Those who are left to mourn his departure are his beloved aged companion, three children twenty grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and a brother David of Hershey, Nebraska, two sisters, Mrs. Martha Wickersham of Sunnyvale, California; and Mrs. Julia Wolfe of Pomona, California; besides a host of other relatives and friends.
