Both enlisted in Co. I, 38th Ind Inf on Oct. 4, 1861;
both were killed in action at the Battle of Perryville, KY
on Oct. 8, 1862; both bodies were located on the battlefield by his father, who brought
Alfred and his
brother Samuel home for burial in the Robert Hall Farm Cemetery
in DuBois County, Indiana; the graves were moved to Patoka Memorial Gardens in the 1970s.
