Obituary for Jesse James Kesterson
Succumbs to illness of longstanding. With the closing of the week, and with the record of a long life of service behind him in the work of His Master, the Rev. J. J. Kesterson, of Sedalia, passed away at the home of his son, Bernard Kesterson, a short distance from the village, late Saturday evening. The venerable servant of the Master was 81 years and three months old, the major portion of his life having been in the work he was called to do.
To many of the older residents of the county and of this section, the name of J. J. Kesterson was known as one who was instant in season and out of season, and although an invalid for the past seven years of a more or less serious nature, he had often been found telling the old story in his declining years. The deceased is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mollie Kesterson, and five children, three sons and two
daughters, as follows: G. A. Kesterson, of St. Louis; Dr. W. J. Kesterson, of the government hospital at Dawson Springs, and Bernard Kesterson, at whose home he passed away; Mrs. Elmer Boyett, of Wingo, and Mrs. Lillian Jones, of Ft. Myers, Fla. All were present at the funeral, save Mrs. Jones, G. A. Kesterson arriving yesterday morning, after the passing of the father.
The death is attributed in the main to the general debilities of age, although the reverend gentleman had
been a sufferer from dropsy, other than his invalided condition. The funeral was held at the Sedalia Baptist Church Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o?clock, with the Rev. A. H. Murphey, one of his comrades in arms, in charge. Interment followed in the Sedalia Cemetery.

Back about 1916 my uncle Dr. Will Kesterson, decided to move to Amarillo from Kentucky to practice medicine. He brought his family here but the doctors in Amarillo said that this town didn't need another MD. They suggested Groom, so Uncle Will settled down in Groom to practice. He and Aunt Hallye liked the place and they stayed there until he was drafted into medical service in World War I. He never returned to Groom, but the oldtimers around Groom still remember him. They also remember his brother Iris Kesterson who followed Uncle Will from Kentucky. He was a handsome bright young man, but he wasn't in the Panhandle but a few weeks - it may have been days - when he was killed in a car accident. He was driving back to Groom one dark night and he must have gone to sleep, because his small car turned over and pinned him beneath it. Oldtimers at the Groom Lion's Club remembered this incident also.
My brother and I used to visit in Groom when we were small boys. Many of the buildings and houses are just the same as they were 40 years ago. About the only changes are the filling stations and restaurants and elevators that line the highway and the railroad track. Its farming and Interstate 40 that keep Groom going. Most of the Groom people have become reconciled to an Interstate 40 bypass around Groom some day. However, they have a wide street to carry the traffic and they hope that the bypass is 10 or 15 years away.
Several years ago my cousin, Tee Kesterson, now a doctor in California, wanted to see the house in Groom where he was born. It wa seasy to find because it was and still is next door to the old two-story Wineinger home place.
