GYP HILL SCHOOL
Written & Researched by Jodean McGuffin Martin
I found this School Census Book in the Greer County Court House at Mangum, Oklahoma, while looking at the old school records. There was a Gyp Hill I and Gyp Hill II. One of them was on the NE corner of Louis Roberts's section. Uncle Charley said it set in the corner on the west side of the road facing the east. One of the Gyp Hill schools was north of the Fairview Schoolhouse. Yellow Canyon was north of Ed Trumbo's corner 1 1/2 miles on the west side of the road. The Martin children went to the Gyp Hill School on Louis Roberts's section. Listed in the book were those students who went to school with the Martin children in 1913.

Summary: 33 white students - Signed by School Clerk
In about 1917 these three schools consolidated to form a new school district of Fairview Independent School district. The square shaped Gyp Hill Schoolhouse on the northeast corner of Lewis Roberts's section was moved to A.T. Perryman's. Grandma Perryman lived in it until her death. Ward and Jack built a new house. We aren't sure what happened to the old school after that.
The other Gyp Hill was moved to the Shelton farm and added to the half dugout that was built on the original homestead. They are still using it and the dug out as a residence today. They have added running water, a patio and hot tub. The original two-room schoolhouse has not been altered except for weatherproof windows that the Shelton's installed. The dugout is used as their master bedroom.
The enumeration sheet for Gyp Hill school was signed by Emma L. (Dolby) Martin and she gave the age of each on of the Martin children.
