JOHN BASSE, Planter, oldest surviving son of Nathaniel and Mary Jordan Basse, was born 7 Sep 1616 in London, England. It is related that John, then 5 years old, was one of the survivors of the 1622 Indian massacre at Basse's Choice in Virginia, having been rescued by some friendly Nansemond Indians. Evidently his parents were in England or on the seas at the time. However, in 1637 there is record of Mr. Thomas Hampton Clarke receiving 50 acres for the passage of "John Bassell to New Norfolk Co. (Nansemond Co.) Virginia. Perhaps the young Basse children were taken back to England after the massacre to grow up there!

From the preserved records entered in a Sermon book dated 1616, printed in London, belonging to Nathaniel Basse, the following marriage is recorded:

"JOHN BASSE married ye dafter (daughter) of ye King of ye Kingdom named Petter, by name ELIZABETH in Holy Baptism and in Holy Matrimonie ye 14 day of August in ye year of our Blessed Lord 1638."

This book was inherited by John Basse who continued to record family events until his death in 1699 A.D. The inventory of John Basse, Norfolk Co., Virginia, dated 19 Sep 1699 mentioned a Bible and Sermon Book among the assets of his estate.

Keziah Elizabeth died 4 Dec 1676 at Nansemond, Norfolk Co., Virginia.
