That
this James of Elizabeth Twp., Allegheny Co. was son of Peter
Patterson of Washington Twp., Fayette Co. is nicely substantiated by
the following deed abstract, published in Patterson &
Pattison Vol. 2, p. 89:
Fayette
Co. Deed Bk. Q, p. 464. Aug. 17, 1830. William Pattreson & wife
Sarah, Peter Patterson and wife Jane, Thomas Patterson, Isaac C.
Patterson, all of Elizabeth Twp., Allegheny Co., Pa., sold to Jesse
Greer, land was patented to Peter
Patterson and [2nd] wife Mary, the grandfather of said
William, Peter, Thomas & Isaac C. Patterson, Feb.
5, 1798. March 2, 1816, Peter, the elder, conveyed parrt of said
land to his son James Patterson & Peter Patterson his grandson,
son of said James Patterson, including land said Peter & Mary
had conveyed to his son Thomas whereas said James Patterson since
deceased—right conveyed to his
sons.
Also, Abstracted in
Patterson & Pattison Vol. 2, p. 87: Fayette Co. Bk. S., p. 89.
Jesse & Nancy Greer now of Elizabeth Twp., Allegheny Co., Pa.,
sold to Hugh C. Fred of Washington Twp. Several ch ildren of said
James Patterson, dec’d had not signed. Rec. April 13, 1833.
**The
following may
be
a deed involving this William, son of James (abstract in
Patterson & Pattison, Vol. 2, p. 87): Fayette Co. Bk. N. p. 194.
April 29, 1823. William Patterson & wife Sally of
Washington Twp., to David Wells of Redstone Twp. Patent, Sept. 28,
1786 to Thomas Freeman & wife Margaret, Feb. 10, 1787 to Robert
Lynn & wife Catherine, March 3, 1800 to Andrew Dunn & wife
Elizabeth, March 2, 1805 to William Patterson adj. James Griese,
Joseph Lyons, Wm. Steel, Nath’l Clark. Wit.: Thomas Wells, Robert
Patterson, April 29, 1823.
14
The following deed mentions William
(son of James, son of Peter) and William’s wife Sally; who these
OTHER Pattersons are (William Patterson & wife Pamelia) we have
no clue. Abstracted in
Patterson & Pattison Vol. 2 p. 88: Fayette Co. Bk. T. p.
187. April 4, 1834.
William Patterson & wife Pamelia of Washington Twp., to James
Wells, patent to Sam’l Freeman & wife Margaret, Feb 10, 1787, to
Robert Lyon & wife Catherine, March 3, 1804, to Andrew Dunn
& wife Elizabeth, March 2, 1805; to William Patterson & wife
Sallly, April 29 1823 to David Wells & mary his wife; to William

William Patterson, May 1830 to his son William, contracting party.
Wit.: John H. Farr. Rec. April 4, 1834. (Farr or
Tarr?)
****Various
internet trees show that John, son of Peter Patterson, m. Rebecca Oliphant with whom
he had the above listed children. We are not
absolutely
sure that this correct.
We believe that researchers in the past might
have “grafted” these children onto “our” John above solely because perhaps
both of these Johns had a son named Andrew. According to Ellis in
History of Fayettte County, p. 351, JOHN (not Peter) was the
name of the father of the John who married Rebecca
Oliphant
andwho
eventually removed from Menallen [Luzerne?] Twp., Fayette Co., to
aplantation near Wellsburg, WVA. Whether or not the maiden name of
John’s wife, Rebecca, was Oliphant, one thing is sure: John and wife
Rebecca had a son named Andrew. That John married a woman
named Rebecca is confirmed in the deed abstracts below, and that
John had a son named Andrew is confirmed in the will of Peter
Patterson who names Andrew, son of his son John. HOWEVER, I simply cannot get
past the fact that Peter’s brother, William, had a son named James
and this James had a son named Andrew Oliphant Patterson. For more of this see
William’s chapter, chapter
II.

"Tree" of Peter's descendants
Patterson & Pattison Assn. Vol. 2 p. 91 claims this is an abstract of an Orphan’s
Court record found in Fayette Co. Orphan’s Court Bk. 2, p. 100:
“Thomas Patterson estate. Oct. Court 1823, petition of James
Patterson for partition brother Thomas died intestate about Aug. 15,
1825 leaving widow Nancy & no issue but brother and sister – James, John & Mary since become wife
of George Espey. Land in Washington Twp., adj. Lands of
Sam’l Cope, James Patterson, Fred Shearer, Eleazer Brown, heirs of
George Crawford, Nathaniel Wright & John Blythe. Obviously the
“d. intestate about Aug. 15, 1825” is a TYPO in the transcription.
It would not be possible to have Orphans Court
proceedings in 1823 regarding the lands of a dead man who
didn’t die until 1825. This transcription should have been “d.
intestate about August 15,
1823.”
Fayette
Co. Orphans Court Bk. 2,

NOTE:
In
Vol. 2 p. 69 of Patterson & Pattison Assn. the provenance
of the Cleland Bible records, referred to in the
famly tree above, is
described: “contributed by Mrs. Kingston J. Smallhouse of Tucson,
Arizona” who received them from “Miss Helen G. Patterson, 1110 Fifth
Ave., Beaver Falls, Pa., who in turn had copied this from a paper
loaned to her by ‘Uncle Eben Patterson’ (transcribed from a family
bible now possessed by Wendel Cleland, who in turn had been given
this by his father, D.M. Cleland, whose wife was Anna Pollack, a
daughter of ‘Uncle Eben’s’ sister Florelle...” A glance at the
family tree above, at the descendants of Peter’s son James, will
identify the names
described in the “provenance” of the Cleland
Bible.
FINAL
NOTE:
We have no proof that any other children besides James, Thomas,
John, Agnes & Mary were born to Peter Patterson, though Ellis,
in History of Fayette County, p. 617, did write that he had
“a large family.”
Contrary to some published research we have seen, we have
found no evidence of a daughter “Hannah Patterson b. ab.t 1764” who
“m. (1) John Robinson and (2) ____Cunningham” NOR of a son William
Patterson b. abt. 1766” who “m. Sarah ____” and who “d. Bedford
Twp., PA” Neither
baptism records, nor Peter’s will, nor Deed Records, nor Orphans
Court Records, refers to any children of Peter Patterson other than
James, Thomas, John, Mary and
Agnes.

WILL OF PETER
PATTERSON OF
WASHINGTON TWP.,
FAYETTE CO., PA
Note:
Peter’s will can be found in Original Will Book 1, pg.
214. The original
will itself is in amazingly good condition and is still legible, but
the microfilm of this Original Will Book was not exposed in a way
conducive to legible copies. Fortunately, many years ago, the
Fayette Co. Office of Wills made a handwritten transcription of
their oldest wills, and a transcription of Peter Patterson’s will
can be found in Transcription Will Book 1, p. 710. The
microfilm of the transcibed will does, thankfully, yield a legible
copy. We have a copy of
both the original and the transcribed will. As far as we can tell, the
transcription is a pretty faithful copy of the original. Here is OUR
