Please feel
free to use this information for your personal use but please do not copy
in whole for use on the Internet or for profit. I would appreciate your
consideration for the years of work that I have done by providing a link
from your page back to this site.
THIS
PAGE IS A COMPLILATION OF MATERIALS THAT I HAVE FOUND ON MY
ALLEN
LINE PRESENTED
ALONG WITH MY OWN PERSONAL RESEARCH. IT
IS PRESENTED
HERE
AS A RESEARCH AID IN YOUR OWN RESEARCH AND ALL FACTS
SHOULD
BE
VERIFIED.
CAUTIONARY NOTE: THROUGHOUT MY ALLEN RESEARCH I HAVE USED VIRKUS AS
A SOURCE AND AS OF JULY 10, 2005 I HAVE DISCOVERED THAT HIS RESEARCH MUST
BE CONSIDERED QUESTIONABLE. THIS IS DISTRESSFUL AS I BELIEVED MY ALLEN
FAMILY INFORMATION TO BE AS SOLID AS ANY GENEALOGICAL PROJECT CAN
BE. USE VIRKUS AS A STARTING POINT FOR YOUR OWN RESEARCH ONLY AND
DOCUMENT AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. WHEN IN VIRGINIA ON A RESEARCH TRIP
THE LOCAL GENEALOGICAL AND HISTORICAL MUSEUM WAS CLOSED FOR REMODELING AND
I WAS NOT ABLE TO DOCUMENT FROM ORIGINAL SOURCES AS MUCH AS I WOULD HAVE
LIKED. WE SPENT 2 DAYS AT THE LIBARARY OF VIRGINIA BUT WE HAD BOTH
MY HUSBANDS 6 LINES AND 2 OF MY LINES TO SEARCH FOR, THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH
TIME FOR ALL OF IT SO I DROPPED THE ALLEN LINE THINKING IT WAS PRETTY
SOLID ANYWAY. WE ALL LEARN OUR GENEALOGICAL LESSONS THE HARD WAY, SO
AS I HAVE STATED THROUGHOUT MY WEBPAGES USE MY INFORMATION AS A
STARTING POINT FOR YOUR OWN RESEARCH!

In beginning my research
for my Allen line I held out little hope that I would find anything
that would lead me to the correct family. My first bit of information came
from my Aunt who wrote that Hugh Moore was married to Elizabeth Allen, the
Moore family being from Rockbridge Co. West Virginia, no more “facts”
given. For years I found
nothing more until my research trip to Kentucky in the fall of 2001. In the Boone County Library,
Sheben Branch I found an obscure self published book They Came To
Kentucky by Alberta Carson Kirkwood, which had just a short
paragraph that told me that Hugh Moore was married to Anne Allen daughter
of Hugh Allen. The book had
little on Hugh but gave enough information to lead me (via internet) to
researchers, Lynne Hundley, and Lynne Marie Rush, who gave me the
information below. From this
I was able to send for the necessary wills to verify the
information.
The earliest records
of my Allen branch were found in Augusta County, Botetourt County,
and Rockbridge Co., Virginia.
Note: In Botetourt County there were two Hugh Allen
families. They both had sons
named Malcolm, John, James, and daughter’s Rebecca. I have been told by a long time
researcher that the families are not related. It is my opinion however, that
they are indeed connected in some way, I draw my not very informed theory
from the use of the common names, the similar dates and both families
moving to the Lexington, Kentucky area about the same time and my
Hugh Moore who married Anne Allen, purchased his Boone county land from a
Henry Andersen. Anderson is
the “other Hugh’s” wife’s name, they both had connections to the Bird
(Byrd) (surname not the fowl) and Poage families. I think there are just too many
coincidences for them not to be related. Because of the continual use of
the same Christian names it is difficult to state that I have the two
families separated and sorted correctly. At this time I am including only
the Hugh Allen family from which I am descended.
