Sikes (Sykes), Joshua, Private, N.C. Militia - Soldier served at the battle of
Moore's Creek Bridge under Capt. John DeVane and Col. Alexander Lillington
where he helped throw up the breastworks. At that time he was living in
Bladen Co., N.C. In N.C. Army Accounts, Vol. V., Bk 180, he received voucher
#457 M for 1/3/6 pounds. In the 1784 special census for Sampson Co., Joshua
was taxed for 920 acres and 3 free white polls. He did not appear in the 1790
National Census for Sampson. His son John was appointed to administer the
estates of both his father and mother (Joshua and wife Esther) at the Aug 1808
term of Sampson Court. When John made his report to the Court on 13 Feb 1809,
he stated that his parents estate amounted to 693/1/8 pounds. Son John, born
in 1778, married Roda C.A. Herrington. From early New Hanover County records
we learned that Joshua Sikes was a planter on the east side of Black River and
sold much land in that area before coming to Sampson Co. In these deeds his
wife is referred to as Emery. (One source tells that Joshua married Mourning
Brown, daughter of the Rev. Edward Brown and that Joshua was an elder of Great
Cohera Baptist Church ( Note: Mourning was the wife of Joshua Sikes, son of
the Private Joshua Sikes above).
