Jeremiah M. Hayman, Susan's brother, was born in Bryan County, GA (about 30
miles west of Savannah) on 28 Dec. 1882. The Hayman family moved to Madison
County, FL in 1837, and a year later Jeremiah and his father, James, joined a
volunteer company under the command of Capt. M.C. Livingston to fight in the
Seminole Indian Wars. Again in 1839, Jeremiah joined another volunteer
company under Capt. W.I. Bailey at Magnolia, FL and served for four months.

In January, 1843, Jeremiah and his father both settled on land near Lake
Lindsey, Hernando County, obtained under the armed occupation act of 1842.
