My Baker Family History begins with a deed1, dated 11 October 1761, between Solomon HUFFHAM and John BAKER of Bladen County, NC that reads as follows: THIS INDENTURE Made the 11th day of October in the 34th year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord George the second by the grace of God of Great Britain France & Ireland Defender of the Faith & c Anno Dom 1761 Between Solomon HUFFHAM in the County of New Hanover in the Province of North Carolina of the one part and John BAKER in the County of Bladen in the aforesaid province of the other part. Witnesseth that the said Solomon HUFFHAM for & in consideration of the full & just sum of Twenty pounds Procl to him & truly paid by the said John BAKER the receipt whereof the said Solomon HUFFHAM doth hereby acknowledge & himself fully satisfied the said Solomon HUFFHAM doth for the in consideration aforesaid give grant & sell & convey & confirm unto the said John BAKER his heirs assigns forever a certain tract or parcel of land & plantation being & lying in the County of New Hanover lying & being in the Fork of Black River where the said HUFFHAM lives given by Patent dated the 30th of September in the of his reign 1751 running the several courses thereof relating thereunto being had will more fully & largely appear to have & to hold the said land & premises with all the rights privileges profits inventures & appurtenances thereunto belonging or appertaining & I the said Solomon HUFFHAM for myself my heirs executors and administrators do further covenant promise & agree with the said John BAKER his heirs Executors & administrators that he the said John BAKER his heirs & assigns shall & may at all times forever have & by force & virtue of these presents lawfully peaceably & quietly have hold use occupy & possess & enjoy the said land premises with appurtenances thereunto belonging as aforesaid from all molestation interruption or hindrance from by or under him the said Solomon HUFFHAM his heirs Executors Administrators or any of his Executors or Administrators & the said Solomon HUFFHAM for himself his heirs Executors Administrators doth firmly covenant & ingage that the said land in every part & parcel thereof free & clear & stands firmly and clearly acquitted exonerated & discharged of all former gifts grants bargains or sales or leases mortgages with jointures or doweries or entails Judgments Execution of incumbrances or Extents by the said Solomon HUFFHAM me my Heirs executors Administrators the said Land & premises with every of these appurtenances to the said John BAKER his heirs assigns forever will warrant & defend against lawfull claim or damage of any person or persons whatsoever in Witness Whereof I have hereunto set my hand & fixed my seal this – day & year first above written.
