Ruth Castor was born November 29, 1806 in Western Pennsylvania, daughter of Noah and Rebecca (Matheny) Castor. On the Castor side of the family she is of mostly German descent. Ruth's father, Noah Castor, moved the family from Pennsylvania to Green Township, Richland County (now Ashland County) Ohio. Here Ruth married Datus Ensign Studley about 1830. They were listed on the 1830 census as a couple with no children. When her fathere wrote his will in 1829 he bequeathed Ruth a young colt but did not mention that she was married. Almost immediately after Noah died and left the farm to Rebecca and youngest son Benjamin, the other children took their one dollar inheritance and moved to Indiana. On the 1830 census only Rebecca, Benjamin, Datus and Ruth were still in Green Township. Datus and Ruth settled in Stony Creek Township, Madison County, Indiana in 1837. They had three sons fighting in the Civil War. Datus was a farmer and a Methodist Minister in the Fall Creek Circuit. Ruth died 15 May 1872. Datus died 16 June 1874. Both were buried at Woodward Cemetery, Lapel, Madison County, IN.
One of my sources of information on the Studley, Castor
and Elsten families is the book History of Lapel and Fishersburg
by Edith V. Cascadden 1938, a gift from Clarence "Cricket" Elsten.
Other information came from Jean White, whose husband
Charles is descended from Datus and Ruth.
For children and census information see Datus Ensign
Studley.
