Mrs. Maria Jane Mattox, wife of William Mattox, died
Friday evening at her home near Russells Point. She was a niece of Dr.
C. W. Heffner, Joseph Heffner, and Mrs. John Gray, all of this city. Mrs.
Mattox was born in Venango County, Pennsylvania, January 14, 1849 and married
William Mattox September 3, 1867. Her maiden name was Clark. Three children
were born to them and all are dead. She leaves besides her husband three
sisters and two brothers and had been ill a long time of cancer. One son
died in infancy and two reached manhood and died some 15 years ago leaving
several children. Four of the grandchildren reside at the Mattox home.
The deceased was a member of the Saint's church and a good woman. Mrs.
Mattox was a lover of nature and about her house each summer she cultivated
many beautiful flowers and she was never happier than when she was privileged
to present them to her friends. She was a lover of children and everything
that was good and pure and her home was one of the most hospitable in Washington
Township. Kind, thoughtful, and considerate of others welfare and happiness,
she endeared herself to many who deeply regret that she has been called
to answer the final summons. Funeral will be held at the home Sunday afternoon
at 2 sun time and burial will be in the Lewistown Cemetery.
Mariah Jane Clark met William Mattox when she was visiting
her grandparents, Daniel and Mary Heffner, in Logan County, Ohio. Later
he went to Venango County, Pennsylvania, and married Mariah on September
3, 1867. She was the daughter of William and Mary (Heffner) Clark.
