Notes on James Lewis Elsten
James was born in New Jersey and moved to Clermont Co. OH before 1820 and then to Warren Co. Ohio where he worked as a blacksmith. He came to Fishersburg, Madison County, Indiana in 1856 and opened a grocery store in addition to his blacksmithing. He was twice married. His first wife was Anna Wene. His second wife was Rebecca McGrew. She lived to be 94 and was known in Fishersburg as "Grandma Elsten". His son Stephen Arnold Elston by his first wife married Martha Jane Studley and moved to Ohio. Their first daughter was Laura Alice Elsten, wife of John Wilson Collins and mother of Eva Mae Collins. Eva married Roland Joseph Clark and had five children. The second of these is Bernard Alfred Clark, the one who composed this family tree.

Notes on Anna Wene
The Early Germans of New Jersey by Chambers: Hoffman page 411: Mary Hoffman, born 1779, Dec. 29, married first Laurance Wean and second Coon Wean son of Conrad. Coon was short for Coonrod, which in turn was a nickname for Conrad. The name later was spelled Wene. I am descended from Anna Wene, daughter of the first marriage between Lawrence Wene and Mary Huffman. The names were spelled variously in different documents.

History of Hunterdon & Somerset Counties, New Jersey by James P. Snell 1881 tells of brothers Conrad and Paul who were in the Revolutionary War of 1775. Paul had sons Paul, Lawrence, Conrad, Peter, John C.; Conrad had sons Coonrod 1756-1859, Peter and others. Other unplaced Wean and Wene surnames in that chapter were Lydia, Gersham, born between 1810 and 1820 probably a son of Peter; and Mariah, Rachel, George and Margaret on the 1850 census for Hunterdon Co., NJ. In this book John C. Wene born 1809 a son of Paul and Elizabeth Cregar Wene uses the current spelling, but David F. Wene signed his name Wean. His father was Peter. These families were Presbyterians and German Reformed.

My Anna Wene accompanied her mother (Mary Huffman) and stepfather Coonrod Wene to Clermont Co. Ohio prior to the 1820 census and married James Lewis Elsten, who had also come from New Jersey prior to 1820 perhaps with his aunt Eunice and Uncle John Masters. Later Anna and family moved to Madison Co., Indiana.

Doing further research as to the origin of the name Wean/Wene I suspected that it was shortened from Weingarten or something like that. Before the Revolutionary War there were families by that name in Hunterdon County, NJ, but the name disappeared about the time that the Wene name appeared.
