Notes on Jacob Collins:

That little old shoemaker.  Looking more Amish than Methodist, Jacob raised his family in Pleasant Plain, Harlan Township, Warren County, Ohio.  Three of his children, George, Freddy and Ernest, died young and are buried next to him and his wife Mary.  Their home was near the Cincinnati and Marietta Railroad, where son John got his start working as a laborer as a teenager.  Jacob's father, Edmund, was an early settler in the Miami Valley, emigrating from New Hampshire.  They lived in Wayne Township, Clermont County, Ohio, where his mother Hannah died soon after his birth.  Jacob was raised by a step-mother not so much older than he.  At age 18 Jacob lived and worked on the McKinney farm nearby. After his marriage to Mary Long, who had two children of her own, they resided in Lerado, Clermont Co. OH until after John was born in 1861 and finally made their home in Pleasant Plain before 1870, where Jacob owned one and a half acres.  When his father died in 1862 Jacob inherited $500, but would not receive it until after his mother died.
