Notes on John Elston
The Elston Family in America  1942 by James Strode Elston,  page 38:
"In the Reformed Dutch Church, New York, Records in the Collections of the N.Y. Gen. and Biog. Soc. we find the baptism:
1671 Eodem (June 11) Jan Elsen, Hendrickje Dircxs (parents); Maria (child) Dirck de Snyder (witness)."

Jan is Dutch for John, and Elsen is a misspelling of Elston or Elsten.  New York was under Dutch rule at one time, and the only church available to these parents was the Dutch Reformed Church.

Notes on Hendrickje Dircxz
This name was listed as the wife of Jan Elsen at the baptism of their child in a Dutch Reformed church in 1671, there being no other churches in the district.  Jan is Dutch for John, and the spelling of English names was not a strong point with the Dutch.  Even later generations of Elston spelled it or had it spelled for them Elsten, Elsen, Alston, etc.  This note is from the book The Elston Family in America 1942 by James Strode Elston.

Dutch names:

The suffix -je on a name makes it feminine.  Thus, Hendrickje is the male name Hendrick or Henry with the feminine suffix -je, making it equivalent to Henrietta.  In the 16th and early 17th centuries surnames were not yet in common use.  As a surname they usually gave the father's first name with an -se on it.  Dirk or Dirck became Dirkse or Dircxz.  Hendrickje Dircxz would be Henrietta daughter of Dirk Snyder.  The old way of writing that name would be Dirck Snijder.  He was the godfather of Jan (John) Elsen (Elston) and Hendreckje's child Maria in 1671.  Snyder literally means "the cutter" and could reflect his job.  The wife of John Elston would be called Henrietta Snyder today.
