*Note: Bergen Township, Genesee County, New York was formed in 1812 from Batavia Township. The first settlement in Bergen Village was by Samuel Lincoln from Connecticut in September 1805. This is a possible clue to Datus' CT connection. His father lived in Tolland Town, Tolland Co., Connecticut from his birth in 1774 until after the 1790 census. By 1800 he was in New York state, so Datus was likely born in Jefferson Co. or Otsego Co., New York.
There are tax records for Datus starting in the year 1831 in Green Twp., Ashland Co., Ohio. On the 1830 census he was listed as age 20-30 with a wife 20-30 and no children and enumerated between Rebecca Castard (Castor) and Bengamin Castard (Benjamin Castor). Rebecca was the widow of Noah Castor, and Benjamin was the youngest son and heir to two thirds of the farm and a brother of Datus' wife Ruth.
In 1840 Datus and Ruth with their first five children bought a log cabin in Stony Creek Township from the heirs of John Fisher on land which is now Lapel. They built a new house of oak, poplar and walnut in 1856, where they reared their eleven children. The Studley farm was originally 160 acres, but the railroad right of way took some, the highway took some more, and parts were sold until the remaining land was 56 acres. When Datus died in 1874, the heirs sold the homestead. The Studley house, which by 1886 sat on a 100' x 132' lot, was moved back from the road to make way for a store, which became a bank in 1918. Datus preached in the M.E. Church.

One of my sources of information on the Studley, Castor
and Elsten families is the book History of Lapel and Fishersburg
by Edith V. Cascadden 1938, a gift from Clarence "Cricket" Elsten.
Some information came from Jean White, whose husband
Charles is descended from Datus and Ruth.
I used other histories of Ashland County, Ohio and Madison
County, Indiana.
