Daniel Heffner and Mary Hileman

According to a hand written account that Emma Heffner Cline wrote in 1944, at the age of 88, her father Daniel Heffner did not talk much about himself.  He was born in Franklin County, Pennsylvania and started working at an early age.  His skill at using an axe had him chopping wood for making charcoal, and he did all manner of farm chores.  As a young man he drove a team of 6 horses delivering produce between New York and Philadelphia.  He met and married Mary Hileman in Huntington County, Penna., and the couple had their first daughter, Mary Catherine in 1833.  Gradually they moved to western Pennsylvania and lived in Venango, Clarion, and Allegheny counties before moving to Logan County, Ohio in 1852.  All the children except Mary Catherine, who had recently married in Venango County, Pennsylvania, went with them. There they stayed until they were old and then lived with daughter Margaret Houchin and family in Auglaize County, Ohio where Mary died in 1889.  Daniel was about two weeks shy of his 90th birthday when he died in 1895 at the home of his youngest daughter, Emma Cline.  Both Daniel and Mary were buried in Walnut Hill Cemetery, New Hampshire, Auglaize County, Ohio.  They were the parents of eleven children, one of whom was a medical doctor.  The other boys were farmers and many of the daughters including Emma became teachers.  For the most part Mary Hileman Heffner taught her children their early education at home.

Daniel’s grave stone says, “Daniel Heffner died Sep. 20, 1895 aged 89Y 11M 20D.”  Mary’s says, “Mary wife of Daniel Heffner died May 5, 1889 78Y 2M 15D.”  However, two obituaries differ on Mary's age.  One gives 78 and one 79.  The official death certificate gives her death as 1885, which must be an error.
