Notes on Conrad "Coonrod" Wene:
Although Conrad "Coonrod" Wene is not a direct line ancestor
of mine, he was a step-father to Paul and Anna Wene, each of whom admired
him enough to name one of their sons Coonrod. He was the only father
they really knew, since their father Lawrence Wene died when they were
babies. Coonrod married cousin's widow in 1810 and took in her two
children. Together they had five of their own, only two of whom lived
long enough to marry. After Mary Huffman's death Coonrod married
another widow with two children, Cassandra Irwin Ross, and they had three
more children. When Coonrod left New Jersey in 1817 he first settled
near Loveland, Miami Township, Clermont County, Ohio. Later he moved
to southern Hamilton Township in Warren County near Dallasburg. After
his second marriage he lived on a fifty acre farm in Brown County where
he died. His orphans were under the guardianship of son-in-law Samuel
Masters, husband of Coonrod's daughter Elizabeth. Coonrod's father
Conrad and two uncles fought in the American Revolutionary War, and Coonrod
was in the War of 1812.
