NOTES by generation:

FIRST GENERATION:
WILLIAM BREWSTER.  He was probably born about 1503.  In 1524 William was taxed in Bently cum Arksey, York, England.  He married Maude Man/Mann and had children William and Henry.

SECOND GENERATION:
WILLIAM BREWSTER II:  A son of William and Maude (Mann) Brewster, William was born about 1535 and died in 1590.  He was living in Scrooby, York, England in 1564 and married Mary (Smythe) Simkinson, widow of John Simkinson.  Mary was the daughter of William Smythe of Stainforth, Hatfield, England.

THIRD GENERATION:
ELDER WILLIAM BREWSTER III. Early Generations of the Brewster Family, by Mrs. Lucy Hall Greenlaw of Boston, Mass., in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, vol. liii. pp. 109-10, contains the following summary of what is now known of the principal events in the life of Elder William Brewster:
"Elder William Brewster . . . was born during the last half of the year 1566 or the first half of 1567. The date of his birth is determined by an affidavit made at Leyden, June 25, 1609, in which he, his wife Mary and son Jonathan declare their ages to be respectively 42, 40 and 16 years. (N. E. Register, xviii, 18-20). Bradford says that he was 'nere fourskore years of age (if not all out) when he dyed.' This statement agrees with the affidavit. The place of his birth is not known, but is supposed to have been Scrooby in Nottinghamshire, England. His father, William Brewster, was appointed by Archbishop Sandys, in January, 1575-76, receiver of Scrooby and bailiff of the manor house in that place belonging to the Archbishop, to have life tenure of both offices. The parish registers of Scrooby do not begin until 1695, and no record of Brewster's birth, baptism, or marriage was discovered by William Paver, a distinguished local antiquary, who held a commission for nearly a quarter of a century to report all items that he found relating to the Pilgrims.
Elder William Brewster and wife Mary with two of their sons were passengers on the Mayflower in 1620.  Their son Jonathan arrived the following November in the ship Fortune.  William as a Separatist had to flee to Holland and lived there twelve years before coming to Plymouth. He printed religious books that he was not free to publish in England. He is listed as about age 54 on the passenger list.  His wife's last name is unknown.

FOURTH GENERATION:
JONATHAN BREWSTER.  Jonathan (1593-1659), son of Elder William Brewster, obtained about 600 acres of land in 1650 from Uncas, sachem of the Mohegan tribe, and fictionalized in James Fenimore Cooper’s book The Last of the Mohicans.  The land is named Brewster's Neck in Preston, Connecticut.  Upon this land he established a trading post to sell goods to the Indians.  He also owned a boat and traded along the coast between the Plymouth Colony and Virginia.  He held town offices and at times worked as an attorney.

FIFTH GENERATION:
BENJAMIN BREWSTER.  Benjamin married Ann (Addis) Darte, widow of Ambrose Darte and duaghter of William Addis on February 28, 1659/60.  He inherited the land on Brewster’s Neck, which because of later boundary changes was located in New London, Norwich, Preston, Groton and Ledyard.  In 1693 he was captain of the military company of Norwich.  Eight children are recorded in the Brewster Book and in town records.

SIXTH GENERATION:
DANIEL BREWSTER.  Daniel married first Hannah Gager, daughter of John and Elizabeth Gager of Norwich, Connecticut.  She died in September 1727, and he married second Dorothy (Morgan) Witter, widow of Witter in December of the same year. He resided in Preston and was justice of the peace in New London County on and off from 1717 to 1728.  He held the rank of lieutenant in 1704 and captain in 1716.  He was also a deacon of the First Church of Preston.

Daniel Brewster's will dated 4 March 1732/33, proved 19 May 1735, notes his recent marriage to Dorothy, widow of Ebenezer Witter and gives her L100 and all the things she brought with her; gives to four sons Daniel, John, Jonathan and Ebenezer the homestead; to Jonathan his tools, to Ebenezer, Mary and Bethiah money with the residue of the moveables to be divided equally among the four daughters, Mary, Bethiah, Hannah and Ruth. He then gave the right of domicile to his wife, Mary and Bethiah while they are unmarried in the house now occupied by Jonathan. He made sons Daniel and John and Joseph Freeman executors. Ruth and John Fobes signed for her share in the estate, 1737.

SEVENTH GENERATION:
JONATHAN BREWSTER. Jonathan, born about 1705, married Mary PARISH November 09, 1725 in Preston, Connecticut.   He married second Prudence (...), known only from mention in his will and in the codicil wherein he stipulated her domicile rights in the homestead.

The will of Deacon Jonathan Brewster, dated Tolland, Hartford County May 1765, proved 5 Oct. 1772 named wife Prudence, noted that son Jonathan had received his portion, bequeathed to eldest son Ephraim the homestead and gave daughters Ruth Vobes (sic) [Fobes?] and Mary Branch equal shares in 11 acres of land and personal property.

EIGHTH GENERATION:
EPHRAIM BREWSTER.  Ephraim left Preston, Connecticut and took up residence in Woodstock, Vermont in 1775 and brought his wife and children there the following year. His wife, Margery Parks, daughter of Elder Paul Parks of Preston, Conn., died in 1841 at age 88 having seen the fifth generation of her descendants.  Their son Dr. Ephraim Jr. married in 1811 and joined the army as a surgeon in the War of 1812. He drowned in Lake Champlain the same year.  His only child, the future Doctor Eprhraim Brewster III was born in 1812.

NINTH GENERATION:
MARGERY BREWSTER.  Here we depart from the Brewster surname and switch to Stiles as Margery married Benjamin Stiles of Woodstock, Vermont in 1802.  They were the generation who moved to Ohio.
