| Frederick TUCKETT, the surveyor,
was in the district in 1844, and made the following reference to Tautuku;-
There is a whaling station managed by PALMER, a brother of our pilot.........A
number of whales have been seen and pursued, but without success. There
were two boats manned and a third would be ready shortly.
In 1840 the only white men in Otago, with the exception
of WILLSHER and RUSSELL who lived at Willsher Bay, were the whalers at
Tautaku. |
