Shorty was born Dec. 10, 1916 in Paragould, Arkansas, to the late Emanuel and Ella Abell and was the second of nine children. Shorty served in the Army 3rd Infantry Division during World War II and earned 10 bronze stars for his service to his country. After being honorably discharged from the Army, Shorty came to Arizona in 1952 and became a meat cutter for Safeway Food Stores, where he met his beautiful wife Inez with whom he worked until his retirement in 1978. ELLADEAN HAYS BITTNER, 89, died June 10 in Anchorage, Alaska, surrounded by her family. She had suffered a stroke five days earlier. Elladean, known as Ellie, was born to Roy and Hazel HAYS February 1, 1919, in Phoenix, Ariz., during the great flu pandemic. She often remarked on why she had no birth certificate: the hospital did not expect her to survive. Ellie grew up on the Hays Ranch in Peeples Valley. Her ancestor, Boone Hays, Daniel Boone’s grandson, drove cattle to California in 1849 and began the family ranching operations, which remain in business to this day. Ellie’s father moved to Arizona in 1912 to start the Hays Cattle Company. He thought California was too crowded: “When they started raising white chickens and Jersey cows, it’s time to move.” As a child and young woman, she worked on the open-range ranch and attended class at the one-room schoolhouse in Peeples Valley, which she successfully fought to preserve in the last years of her life. When her older sister Margaret first went to school, Ellie also packed up her things and headed across the ranch to the one room schoolhouse, only to be sent home each day, as she was too young. Ellie wouldn’t take no for an answer and, after escaping home and going to school on her own several times, she was finally allowed to attend permanently. Ellie often shared stories of riding the range around Peeples Valley, proudly laying claim to the fact that she had ridden all of the land you could see for 360 degrees. She studied home economics at the University of Arizona, graduating in 1939. During her time at the University of Arizona, she rode with the U.S. Army Cavalry and was crowned “Aggie Queen.” She was chosen to be a member of Mortar Board, a national honor society. Ellie married William Edward Bittner on August 5, 1944. Bill was born in 1917 in Anchorage and learned to fly in Alaska. With the shortage of pilots during World War II, Bill instructed Navy recruits in Holbrook, Ariz., where he met Ellie. They honeymooned in the territory of Alaska that year, traveling by Alaska steamship to Anchorage to meet her in-laws Catherine and Edward Bittner, and Catherine’s mother Anna Ashton, who had moved from Nome to Anchorage in 1915. There she encountered another breed of Western women - Anna, who had run the Banner Train Station outside of Nome during the gold rush, and Catherine, who won the Nome High School dog mushing race on the Bering Sea in 1914. In 1950, Ellie and Bill moved to Anchorage with their children Catherine, William and Judith. Ellie worked for the Anchorage School District from 1951 to 1964, teaching home economics at Anchorage High School and later at East High School. She started a boys’ cooking class and an early childhood education daycare. Ellie later attended graduate school in early childhood development at Cornell University and Oregon State University. Governor Hickel appointed Ellie to a position with the State Department of Education. In this position, Ellie traveled extensively, interviewing women in remote villages and towns around Alaska and published a study that was a pioneer effort to identify economic opportunities for women in Alaska. Ellie returned to ranching in the early 1970s when she and Bill began splitting their time between Alaska and Arizona. She established the “Quien Sabe” Outfit, in her words a greasy sack outfit, and remained active in ranching until her death. Ellie and her Quien Sabe Outfit were featured in the “Modern Ranching Women” exhibit at the grand opening of the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame in Fort Worth, Texas, in June 2002. Ellie is included in “Hard Twist,” Barbara Van Cleve’s book on Western ranching women. Ellie was involved in many community organizations throughout her life including the Nature Conservancy, Peeples Valley Yarnell Historical Society, and Wickenburg Cultural Organization. She served as chairman of the Desert Caballeros Western Museum and as president of the Yavapai Cattle Growers Association, which hosted the annual Calf Sale at the Hays Ranch. She is survived by her daughter Catherine and son-in-law Senator Ted Stevens; son William and daughter-in-law Michelle; daughter Judith Bittner; granddaughters Angie Cagle and Lily Stevens; grandsons Jonathan, Daniel, William, and Nicholas Bittner; great-grandson William Edward Cagle; sister Margaret Rigden; brother John Hays and sister-in-law Mary Hays; nieces Cynthia Rigden, Anna Mary Rigden, Janie Surgent, Becky Rovey; nephews Charles Rigden and Johnny Hays; and many other beloved great nieces, great nephews and other family members. She is preceded in death by her husband William Edward Bittner and parents Roy and Hazel Hays. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Elladean Hays Bittner will be held later this year in Wickenburg. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Desert Caballeros Western Museum, 21 North Frontier Street, Wickenburg, Arizona 85390, 684-2272.

Abigail Joy “Ava” Garcia was born Sept. 4, 1989 and died in a single-car crash on May 21, 2008. Abigail was a brilliant star. She was reading at four years old. In spite of her mother’s concerns, she skipped third and seventh grades. She was determined and refused to be slowed. She entered high school at 11 years old.During her junior year at Wickenburg High School she went to Thailand as a Rotary Club exchange student - at age 14. She graduated just shy of valedictorian at 16 years old, and went to Reed College in Portland, Ore. There she found her niche - friends, acceptance, and true academic challenge. At Reed she was a Chemistry major, and the recipient of a nearly full-ride scholarship. She received a commendation for academic excellence from Reed College in 2007. She was given a full Chemistry internship at Palo Verde Nuclear Plant this summer. When asked what she would do after graduation, she said that she might work at Palo Verde for awhile and probably get her master’s degree.“But what I think I really want to do at some point is teach,” she said. “I know I’d make more money being a chemist somewhere, and I’ll probably do that for awhile. But my teachers at Wickenburg High School made a real difference in my life, and I’d like to do the same for other kids. Probably in a small town. Maybe even Wickenburg!” Ava is a giver. During finals week, she baked brownies for everyone on her dorm floor. She was taking her own finals in Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Intro to Analysis and Physics, but she found a way to give smiles to her friends. Now, in death, she is still giving. Through being an organ donor, Ava has already saved five lives, and is helping many more. Ava was the light of her mother’s life. The loss for both mother and the world is immeasurable. She was - and is - a beautiful, brilliant soul who had great things to do in this world. Even in death, she found a way to make an enormous, positive impact, saving lives and helping countless people live better. Ava is survived by her mother Tamara Thomas, her father Art Garcia, uncle and aunt Robb and Carol Thomas, uncle and aunt Julian and Ragie Garcia, numerous cousins and untold friends. A memorial was held on Thursday, May 29. Donations are being accepted for a scholarship in Abigail’s name to benefit graduating seniors at Wickenburg High School. Donations may be made at any Bank of America, in the name of Abigail Garcia c/o Tamara Thomas.

DOLLIE RUTH COON GATES passed away on June 8 at EIRMC of a sudden illness with her family at her side. Mom was born fourth in a family of six to Frederick and Lillie COZAD COON at Queen Creek Siding, Maricopa County, Ariz., on Feb. 21,1923. When the children were old enough to attend school, the family moved to Wickenburg. Dollie loved her growing-up years there, even though it involved a lot of hard work. We loved her stories of the desert life, and all the things kids had to do there. Mom was not only proud of having graduated from Wickenburg High School in 1940, but that she had attended Northern Arizona University. Mom was offered a prestigious position of being a “Harvey Girl” at the Bright Angel Lodge at the Grand Canyon. One day as she walked into the dining area in her uniform, there was a young man playing in a band who admitted that when he saw her, he totally “destroyed” the song. Elgin T. Gates married Dollie in July of 1941 in Flagstaff, Ariz. Mom and Dad lived mostly in the Southern California area until moving to Ammon, Idaho in 1978. Most of their married years Mom supported Dad’s dreams of speedboat racing, but especially of big game hunting. He spent months on end traveling the world on hunts, and she stayed home and raised the children. Dad said he couldn’t have done it without Mom’s love and support. Elgin passed away in November of 1988. Dollie was known for her flowers, her artwork, but especially for her love of family and friends. She was a member of the Church of Christ. Mom and Dad had five children: Sharron (Ken Bogowitz) Ward of Hawaii; Irene (Tom) Graham of California; Elgin F., Randolph (Judy), and Robert (Diane) Gates all of the Ammon area, seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by brother Fred Coon Jr. of California. Mom was preceded in death by Dad, three sisters, and a granddaughter. Services were held Friday, June 13 at Coltrin’s Mortuary. Internment at Ammon Cemetery will be a private service at a later date.

It is with deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of JERRALD JAY HAWKINSON on May 18. Born July 21, 1932 in St. Paul, Minn., Jerry is survived by his wife of 55 years Delaine; daughter Kim of Huntington Beach, Calif.; son Rande of San Antonio, Texas; their spouses; four granddaughters; two grandsons; brothers Donald of Melbourne, Florida, and Richard of Covington, Virginia; and sister Lois of Harlingen, Texas. Jerry retired from the U.S. Marine Corps, and after having come up through the ranks, he completed his 20 years of service as a Captain. The family made its home in Southern California, where he spent a number of years teaching aircraft mechanics at several local colleges. Probably one of his proudest endeavors was building a mountain home in Northern California in 1978. He and his son Rande spent many long hours building while his wife go-ferred and manned the chain saw while his daughter Kim stained many board feet of lumber. After various careers, he finally retired in 1994 to pursue his Swedish grandfather’s love of the violin. He learned to play and went on to repair and build fiddles. Moving to Wickenburg in 2004, he divided his time playing at the Wise Owl and Chaparral with his bosom buddy Ernie Varner. Ernie’s band was known as Country Grass, and they played and sang as long as anyone wanted them to. He had a repair shop in his home and helped many by repairing their instruments or simply providing parts, and advice, or hairing the bows. Jerry was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Wickenburg, where he served in several capacities. He enjoyed studying God’s word and singing in the choir. Cancer took him very quickly, and he will be missed more than words can say, but we know he will be playing in God’s heavenly band. Arrangements were made by David’s Desert Chapel and Funeral Home in Wickenburg.

JOHNSON, R. H.
R.H. JOHNSON passed away July 22 at the age of 92 at his home in Wickenburg with wife Marjorie at his side. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday, July 30) at the Del E. Webb Center for the Performing Arts (1090 S. Vulture Mine Road) in Wickenburg. ROBERT HOWARD JOHNSON, an Arizona native, was born February 26, 1916 at the family home located at 1904 E. Tempe Road (now Van Buren Road) to his mother Bessie HORNBECK JOHNSON and father Alfred JOHNSON. His father was employed by Phoenix Trunk Factory on West Washington where he manufactured trunks that were strapped on the rear of automobiles of the period. His mother worked at the Boston Store in Tempe. Johnson attended Monroe and Longfellow schools and graduated from Phoenix Union High School in 1933. He couldn't afford college, but he put himself through business school, the Great Western Business College in the Heard Building, and he swept the floors each night for tuition. He learned short hand and mastered typing at 120 words per minute. While attending business school, Johnson worked for the Association of General Contractors in a secretarial job, commuting to work on foot each morning at 5 a.m. In 1935, Del Webb came by the AGC offices looking for a timekeeper for his six-man office. At the age of 19 Johnson got the nod and began his career with the Del E. Webb Construction Co. at $75 per month on a dormitory construction project at Northern Arizona University. Johnson believed in hard work, and Webb was quickly aware of R.H.'s attention to detail and work ethic. Webb became his friend and mentor. By 1967 Webb had selected Johnson to be the president of the company. Then the Webb firm had grown to be active in 34 states from Hawaii to New York. The corporation's lifelines were leisure, real estate and construction, including properties like La Posada, Mountain Shadows, the Sahara Hotel in Nevada, veteran's hospitals across the United States and the Sun City development. Prior to Webb's death in 1974 he named Johnson chairman and chief executive officer of the Del Webb Corporation at the age of 56. After a long successful career with the Webb Corporation, in 1981 Johnson retired from the corporate world and immediately took on the role as president of the Del E. Webb Foundation, a non-profit private foundation organized to promote charitable work, with emphasis, but not limited to the field of health and medical research. The Foundation was a result of Webb's personal generosity. Johnson championed sizable grants with naming opportunities honoring Webb and benefiting residents of Arizona, California and Nevada. Respectful of the work done by the Foundation in the health care field and other areas, Johnson was personally proud of the Foundations' support of the Del E. Webb School of Construction at Arizona State University and the Del E. Webb Center for the Performing Arts in Wickenburg. R.H. retired from the Foundation in November of 2007. Over his lifetime Johnson received many awards and accolades but was most humbled by the two honorary doctorate degrees bestowed upon him by Arizona State University in Tempe and Loma Linda University and Medical Center in California. Because he was so involved in the development, health care and economic vitality of the West Valley, he was also moved when honored by WESTMARC/SRP with a Best of the West Leadership Award and when named Man of the Year with the Henry Award from the Town of Wickenburg. R.H. Johnson enjoyed golf (12 handicap) and played for 26 years in the Bob Hope Desert Classic. In 1973 Johnson won the Classic with partner Arnold Palmer. He was an outstanding gardener and spent every spare moment working outside; everything he planted grew. Mr. Johnson was a quiet, generous man and he leaves behind his own legacy; The R. H. Johnson Foundation, a non-profit organization formed to support specific projects in the Wickenburg area; the place he came to call home. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Lawrence, first wife Ellamae "Mazie" DOUGLAS and daughter Susan HAUCK. He is survived by wife Marjorie and son Lawrence. In lieu of flowers; the family requests that donation be made to Hospice of the Valley, the Wickenburg Community Hospital or the Del E. Webb Center for the Performing Arts. Arrangements entrusted to David's Desert Chapel 928-684-0710.

Jimmy Killer was born Oct. 17, 1971 in Phoenix, Ariz. After a short time there, his mother Toni HERSHKOWITZ and father Tommy KILLER moved to Wickenburg, where he lived the majority of his life. Jimmy loved sports - everything from hunting and fishing to becoming an all-season athlete for Wickenburg High School, where he played quarterback for the football team, guard for the basketball team, and pitcher for the baseball team. He began to excel in baseball to the point that when he moved to Arkansas, he joined an American Legion team and had the privilege of pitching in Busch Stadium, the then home of the Saint Louis Cardinals. Jimmy worked construction, primarily drywall like his Uncle Danny, up until the accident that left him paralyzed almost a year from his 21st birthday. With such a strong will for life, Jimmy continued to battle each day for almost 15 years. Jimmy let go of life as we know it and embraced life eternal on June 7, 2008 in Phoenix. He is survived by his mother Toni Hershkowitz of Wickenburg; father Tommy KILLER of Wickenburg; maternal grandmother Eileen BROWN of Arkansas, paternal grandmother Ruby KILLER of Wickenburg; brothers George and Billy Ray and stepbrother Aaron HERSHKOWITZ; and nephew Braydon HERSHKOWITZ. FARISSA KIMBRELL It is indeed with sorrow that we announce the passing of FARISSA "Faye" KIMBRELL on May 16. Born Jan. 30, 1938 in Douglas, Ariz., she grew up in the Snowflake area in northern Arizona before moving to Phoenix. Faye was preceded in death by her brother Frank KIMBRELL, father Albert Farris KIMBRELL, and mother Clarissa (SMITH) KIMBRELL. She is survived by sisters Nell POWELL (Loren) and JoAnn POWELL (Ramon). Nieces Bobbi (Mark) Thurman, Rae Lynn (Les) BUSI, Geri (Andy) JOHNSON, Pam (Mike) ACOSTA. Nephews Kenneth (Button) POWELL and Phillip (Michele) POWELL and special extended family of 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren and devoted friend Peggy CALHOUN. Faye was an extraordinary nurse. Her first job she worked as a school nurse at the Grand Canyon. She also worked at several hospitals in the valley. She worked with doctors at Sun Health/Boswell Hospital to develop many groundbreaking procedures in the field of cardiology. She worked at the Mesa/Boswell School of Nursing many years and using her extensive knowledge base, was more than capable of teaching students from the beginning level up to the graduating level. She lovingly called all of them her “Cherubs”. Arizona is filled with Faye’s Cherubs! The students always came first. On one of her hospital stays, the students preparing for graduation - they hoped - were having trouble learning channels of up-load and down-load, among other things. The nurses on the station brought into her room, two conference tables and 18 chairs and she taught the students, from her bed, what they needed to know to pass their finals. That’s just the kind of person she was. Faye has always been a very active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, leading choirs as well as many teaching callings. She always accepted her challenges making the best of them, and battled her illness with dignity and humor. She died from multiple system failures. Visitation will be on Wednesday (May 21) from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wickenburg Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Thursday (May 22) at 10 a.m. at the Wickenburg Ward building of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints with visitation one hour prior to services at the Church. Family graveside services will be held at the Snowflake Cemetery in Snowflake, Ariz. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Faye’s memory can be made to the Missionary Fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1060 Sunrise Trail, Wickenburg, AZ 85390. Arrangements are under the direction of Wickenburg Funeral Home & Crematory.

“Retty’s always ready” was one of his favorite expressions, but he wasn’t ready for his stroke on May 7. John Retty was a fixture in the Morristown, Wittmann, and Wickenburg communities for 49 years. His contributions to these communities are many. Retty’s Hardware Store in Wittmann, which was the go-to place for 40 years, was not only an adventure to go through, but the place to find anything and everything. He was so proud to offer items no one else seemed to carry and the locals loved visiting him there. The paths around and throughout the store were only one person wide, but John knew exactly where everything was and how much of it he had. Along with the products came advice and sometimes help installing. His incredible work ethic began when he was 8 years old working for his father as a plumber’s helper. Throughout his life he maintained his interest in plumbing. John remained closely tied to the men of the Wittmann Volunteer Fire Department even after he retired. He always supported and appeared at all functions either with his wife or later with Dick Thompson. He volunteered in other ways when he could no longer chase fires. Many people don’t know that the first fire truck for the Department was purchased by John when Phoenix had a sale on some of their fire trucks. His name will be among the honorees in June’s Recognition Banquet. At one time John drove a school bus for the Wittmann/Nadaburg School District. Once every month he would drive the busload of kids to the local Dairy Queen for ice cream and at the end of the school year, gave each of his charges a silver dollar for good luck. John loved food. He was famous for his ability to put away huge amounts of food for a guy with such a small build. Anyone who ever enjoyed a meal with him is bound to have a food story to share. John was born in Detroit, Mich., on January 8, 1921 and came to this area by way of Florida. He established Retty’s Hardware in 1959 and worked it daily until the state needed the land for right-of-way. He married his life partner Imogene in 1967, and they lived at the landmark Cactus Ranch stone house in Morristown. John Retty, “Mr Retty” to many, passed away peacefully on the evening of June 2. He is survived by a stepson Ken Hagen and his wife Maureen of Sun Lakes, Ariz.; step-grandchildren Carol, Bert, Judy, and their families; and a niece Vicky Hough (Scott) of Tucson. Please join the family in saying goodbye to John at the Wickenburg Funeral Home and Crematory at 187 N. Adams St, Wickenburg, on Thursday (June 12) with a viewing from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. followed by a service with Pastor Jack Kelley. Washington Street, Wickenburg, 684-7894. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Wittmann Fire Department at P.O. Box 295, Wittmann, AZ 85361 or the Wise Owl Senior Center where John Retty enjoyed many hours of meals and friendship. Arrangements are under the direction of Wickenburg Funeral Home and Crematory.
