NINETEENTH GENERATION

521326. Bård* SIGURDSON Torsnes(776) (766)(940) (766)(767) was born about 1385 in Torsnes gård #36, Jondal, Hordaland, Norway. He died in 1446 in Torsnes gård #36, Jondal, Hordaland, Norway. Bård Sigurdsson is named in documents between 1410 and 1446. He probably belonged to the lower nobility (country gentry) and would have been a rather substantial landowner in and around Jondal. He was married to Gyrid* TORBERGSDATTER Brandvik about 1410 in Norway. (776)(766) (766)

521327. Gyrid* TORBERGSDATTER Brandvik(776) (766) (925)(836) (767) was born about 1390 in Berge, Strandebarm, Rogaland, Norway. She died after 1452 in Torsnes gård #36, Jondal, Hordaland, Norway. Gyrid is named in a document of 1403, along with her mother. She was also named as a widow in a document of 1452. Although her parents undoubtedly owned Store Brandvik, it is unlikely that she was either born or lived there. She may have been reared on a farm called Andenes or Berge in Strandebarm. The latter is more likely. Berge had been owned by Gyrid's grandfather, Ivar Erlingsson Sandvin. Children were:

child ii. Herborg BÅRDSDATTER Torsnes(925) (836)(767) was born about 1430 in Torsnes gård #36, Jondal, Hordaland, Norway. She died after Mar 1497 in Torsnes gård #36, Jondal, Hordaland, Norway. Herborg and her sister, Gyrid, were the heirs of a very large estate in and around Hardanger. A probate was held on 4 Mar 1497 to distribute property at 43 different farms between the two sisters (including the farm Bratte in Shetland). The total value of this estate has been estimated at 84 laupar smør. The sisters were descended from several prominent families of the lower nobility (lågadel), which is roughly equivalent to the "landed gentry" of England. Several of these families died out in the 1400's, which resulted in a great deal of property passing to Gyrid and Herborg's parents, Bård Sigurdsson Torsnes and Gyrid Torbergsdatter Store Brandvik. The 1497 probate was held after several court cases which confirmed that the two sisters were the rightful heirs to the property in question. Herbert and her husband, Nils Ragnvaldsson, appear to have first lived at Hvitingfoss in Varaldsøy before taking half of the Torsnes farm in Jondal after the death of Herborg's father. Herborg's mother appears to have operated the other half of the farm for several years after being widowed.
