CONTROLLING THE SIGNATURE LINE

Don't include your surnames at the bottom of your messages, because this messes up search engine operations once the message has been archived.

When ending an email it is manners to put in your name and if you want the person to reply, your correct email address. In a Genealogy Newsgroup, it is also polite to put in your signature file where you are eg. Laverton Victoria. This give the other people an idea where you are and they can direct you to places where you can receive help. Your Web Site address is also a good idea. People may want to visit it and could find a connection. This is good advertising. Signature lines should be no more that 4-6 lines.

ATTACHMENTS

Check with the recipient before sending large files as attachments to email. Large files can mess up email programs.

Because of all the scares about virus' it is important that you get permission from the person that you want to send an attachment to before sending it. With most Newsgroups they do not allow attachments to be sent to the Newsgroup. So if you have something of interest, send an email to the group telling them that you have this item, and if they are interested in receiving it as an attachment to contact you privately.

HTML or TEXT

Most Newsgroups will not allow HTML in your emails. So go into your email program and turn off the HTML and tick the TEXT box. Some Newsgroups when you hit the reply to button go straight back to the Newsgroup and not to the original sender. Just in case someone has made the mistake of sending an email to the Newsgroup in HTML, do not reply to the email in the same way. Go in to your email program and untick the box that says, "reply to sender in the same format".
