HENRY BOLCH

SARAH HUNSUCKER

"HENRY & SALLY"

LAST UPDATE: 20 Nov 1999, 6 Feb 2002

The road of discovery of this family line has been a long and difficult one to say the least. I have spent eight long years researching and they have become quite special to me.

Sketchy research had linked our family line with 2 other brothers in Cocke Co. Tennessee, who had traveled from Catawba Co., North Carolina in the early 1850's.

The other Balch families have been well researched and documented over the years.

My 3rd great grandfather, HENRY BOLCH was born Oct 1806 Lincoln Co. North Carolina died after 1880 Webster Co. Missouri buried St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Marshfield, Missouri. He was the son of Johan Adam Bolch and Elizabeth Mauser.

He is listed in the records with the other spellings of his last name Bollicks, Boleck, Bolch, Balch.

He married 24 October 1826 in Lincoln County, North Carolina. Sarah "Sally" Hunsucker b. July 1809 North Carolina d. & buried after 1880 St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Marshfield, Webster Co. Missouri, daughter of John Hunsucker & ______Smith. John son of Johann Theobold Hunsucker

There appears to be the possibility that the Hunsucker and Bolch families have been tied together since arriving in the United States on the ship "Neptune" in 1753 in Phildalphia, PA. They both were well established families in Lincoln & Catawba Counties, North Carolina.

He is listed on the 1830 & 1840 Census for Lincoln Co. North Carolina.

"A HISTORY OF CATAWBA COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA" PG 232 SUPERIOR COURT OF LAW - FALL TERM 1843 - 27 OCTOBER 1843

Superior Court of Law was opened and held County of Catawba at the Court House in NEWTON

Presiding Judge: Hon. Thomas Settle

Court was opened and GRAND JURY drawn, sworn and charged to wit: HENRY BOLICK, DANIEL RADER

DANIEL COONROD, GEORGE HUFFMAN, HENRY MOSER, GEORGE GILBERT, JAMES WILFONG, JOHN MAUNEY, MILES ABERNATHY, BUCKNER BROWN, MARTIN LINEBARGER, REUBEN HOYLE, DANIEL SUMROW, PAUL CLINE, JOSEPH HUIT, DAVID HAWN, MOSES FRY, CONRAD MINGES

Sometime between 1856 to 1860, his two brothers, Joseph Balch and Hiram Balch, made their way to Cocke County, Tennessee along with their families.

In the 1850 census I finally was able to locate Henry & Sally living in Buncombe Co. North Carolina near Sally's brother, DeVault Hunsucker near the town of Weaverville, North Carolina. They were listed as H. BOLLICKS, wife Sally, children: Louisa 22, Emaline 20, Minerva 18, Anthia 11, Gurguine 8, Hartwell 5 & Candus 3. As far as I can tell they migrated between 1856 & 1860 over to Cocke County.

Henry and his family are listed on the 1860 Census 6 June 1860 Pg. 377 District 8, Newport, Cocke County, TN. He was a farmer and his land was valued at $1,000 and personal property at $600, which by no means was "rich", but adequate living for the time.

Those residing in the household were Henry, head of household, age 54; wife, Sarah, age 50, Girdine age 18; Hartwell age 15; Candas age 13; Ellenora age 22; and Carnellus age 4 (female). (NOTE: I have since determined that Carnellus was a grandchild)

In 1870 they are residing in District 6 Newport, Cocke County, Tenn. as a farmer with land value of $2, 000 on 11 July 1870. Household #210. Those residing were Henry age 64; wife Sarah age 61; Hartwell age 25; and Candas age 22.

Living next household #211 is another daughter, Phema Suggs age 29 with two sons, Harrison age 9 & James age 7. Harvey Girdine & Margaret Jane (Faubion) Balch are residing in District 2 Household #39, Parrottsville, Cocke Co. TN with two children.

Through obtaining the Civil War pension file of their son, Hartwell T. Balch, I have determined they moved to Marshallfield, Ozark Twp., Webster Co. Missouri sometime in the early 1870's.

I believe Henry & Sally left Cocke Co. TN about 1871 with the Rader and Renner families for Webster Co. Missouri. As evidenced above by the grand jury records, he had know the Rader family a number of years.

The diary of ANDREW RADER, a Lutheran minister, has recorded marriages he performed of the children of Joseph & Hiram Bolch, brothers of Henry.  This close association leads me to believe they did in fact move with these families.

Henry & Sally Balch, leaving behind their son, Henry Girdine Balch & their grandchildren. It is most likely that they may have never seen Henry and grandchildren again before they died.

In the 1880 Census Marshfield, Ozark Twp., Webster Co. Missouri household #51 Henry age 75; wife Sarah age 70, daughter W.N.E. (Euphema) age 40 with two sons H. H. Suggs age 20 and James H. Suggs age 18 are residing in the household.

The next household #52 is Hartwell age 37 and wife Rebecca age 37.

Household #26 Ellen Balch age 45 residing in the household of her daughter Ellen Carnellus Balch age 29 with her husband, Alexander Butts.

Household #27 is Candas Balch age 34, married to Hiram Miller age 38 born North Carolina, and two of their children.

With losing the 1890 census records it is difficult to determine approximately when Henry & Sally may have died, but most likely between 1880 & 1890. They are not listed in the 1900 census.

HENRY & SALLY's CHILDREN They had 7 girls & 2 boys

MINERVA JANE BOLCH

Born 15 April 1832 in Buncombe Co. North Carolina as the records show.

She died 5 Dec 1914 Worth Twp, Boone County, Indiana and is buried in the Lutheran Cemetery. Her death was attributed to a mitral leakage of the heart.

On 21 Oct 1855 in Catawba County, North Carolina she married JOHN HENRY HEDRICK. He was born 1829 North Carolina d. 11 Nov 1893 Worth Twp, Boone Co. Indiana and is buried in the Lutheran Cemetery, Boone Co. INDIANA. It is believed his parents were JOHN HEDRICK/HEADRICK AND ABIGAIL BAILEY from Catawba County, North Carolina. Some of the members of this family moved to Cocke County, Tennessee.

John Henry Hedrick and his wife Minerva are listed in the 1860 Census Parrottsville, Cocke County, Tennessee. He is a mechanic, which probably attributed to his skills in wagon making. The children living with them at that time were Catherine age 3, born abt 1857 and Garrett(his full name Orlando Garrett Hedrick) age 7 months, born Dec 1859. He died age 31 YR 5 MOS, 10 May 1891 and is buried in the Lutheran Cemetery, Boone Co. Indiana.

In about 1861 another child, Robert M. Hedrick, was born to them while living in Parrottsville, Tennessee.

In 1865 John and Minerva took their family to Whitestown, Worth Twp, Boone County, Indiana. John H. Hedrick was a carpenter and wagon maker by trade. A democrat in his politics, and Lutheran in faith. The Bolch/Balch family were also of the Lutheran faith. Some of the BLAZER families from Cocke Co. Tennessee also moved to Boone County, Indiana before moving on to Webster Co. Missouri. The Blazer's family intermarried into the families of Joseph Bolch.

About 3 years after their arrival in Boone Co. Indiana in 1868 they had another child, William H. Hedrick. After the death of his father in 1893, William was residing with his widowed mother and was a house carpenter by trade.

In 1901 Minerva's brother, Hartwell, died in Webster Co. Missouri without issue. She is listed as an heir to his estate and shown as living in Boone Co. Indiana in the estate records.
