Poland and Genealogy: An Insiders View

by Jozef Taran
Warsaw, Poland

10 November 2001

Dear genealogists,

I was born in 1957 in Warsaw, Poland. I still live in this city, as my father and grandfather did since the beginning of this century. Almost all of my ancestors originated from Central part of Poland (Mazowsze i Podlasie). The only exception I know is one of my grandmother was born Palmer. I supposed her ancestor originated from Germany, but having lastly got some new information about Radziwill of Nieborow and their staff, I am able to research it deeper.

I have a degree in Philosophy. I completed postgraduate studies in financial management. I am a professional manager, specializing in financial controlling. I have worked for ten years as senior manager for known Polish companies.

Genealogy is my passion. I am engaged with it more than 15 years. My surname still causes some puzzle for me though. What turns me on is meeting new unknown relatives from afar.

I hope you will enjoy my essays, although my English is not the best. I do it thanks to Marv who with pressure and patience encouraged me to do it.

Editor's note by Marvin Kusmierz: I was introduced to Jozef through the ROOTS-POLAND Mailing List where he has freely given of his time to help someone else along the way to finding information on their ancestors. He did more than just answer questions. When no one knew the answer, he would do research on his own time to get the answer. His outward and generous personality has made him not only a favorite of mine, but to many others on the list group.

Joseph specializes in research limited to Mazowsze and Podlasie (Central and Eastern part of Poland).
