Smith was born 4 Oct 1868 to James and Rebecca Jane (Mathew) Smith in
Summerville, Union County, Oregon.  She married Martin Peterson "Mart"
Gerking (12-13), the last child of Jonathan Rice and Nancy Ann (Myers)
Gerking.
Nettie was the seventh of nine Smith children and the second one to be
born in Oregon. Two of her sisters, Mary Alice and Martha Ann,
