MINUTES OF THE GERKING FAMILY MEETING
August 11, 2002 — Blue Lake Park, Fairview, Oregon
Thirty-six
members of the Gerking Family signed the guest book at the 43rd Annual
Gerking Family Reunion held at Blue Lake Park just east of Portland,
Oregon. Our hosts were Mike and Gloria Dreske.
The icebreaker nametag game that has
proved so popular at past reunions was played as family members
gathered, and many of the family played pickup softball on the nearby
baseball diamond.
Following lunch and a little time to get further acquainted the business meeting was held.
Business Meeting
President Susan welcomed everyone to the
reunion and thanked Mike and Gloria Dreske for serving as this year’s
hosts.
2001 Reunion Minutes
Secretary Beth read the minutes from the
2001 reunion. It was moved, passed, and seconded the minutes be
approved as read.
Treasurer’s Report
Treasurer Beth reported a balance of
$1,284.14 in the Gerking family savings account as of July 31, 2002.
Income for the year was $320, and expenses totaled $322. It was moved,
passed, and seconded the treasurer’s report be approved as read.
Next Reunion — August 9-10, 2003
President Susan told the group that we
have been invited by the Athena Christian Church, which was founded by
Jonathan Rice Gerking, to hold our reunion in conjunction with the
church’s celebration of its130th year of existence and the 100th year
of the present building’s existence. She thanked Paula Beck, who had
visited with the church’s celebration organizer, Kayla Durfee, and had
been instrumental in getting our group and the church group together.
In addition to Athena and the area around it being the “stompin’
grounds” of many of our Gerking ancestors, many other Gerkings were
also active members at the time the church was built. There are also
many attractions in the area, including the famous Til Taylor statue in
Pendleton. Everyone was quite excited at the thought of holding the
reunion in Athena, and it was agreed that Susan, Beth, and Paula would
work out arrangements with Kayla for the weekend of August 9-10.
Janelle will work on a contribution we might make to the church in
return for their thoughtfulness in inviting us.
Historian’s Presentation
Historian Janelle had put together a
presentation using extensive visual aids showing the immigration route
and history of the allied Willis family on its way to Oregon. There was
great interest in the presentation, with many questions and answers
flowing both to and from the group and Janelle.
Reunion Collection
A collection to cover reunion expenses was held and amounted to $192.00.
Respectfully submitted,
Beth Perry Johnston, Secretary
