Below are two pictures, both sent by Karl Gerking of Bremerhaven, Germany, which should be shared with the entire family. Below you'll see first the picture from 1998,
then the picture from September, 2001.
Emigration Monument, Bremerhaven, GermanyWe carried this first picture in the Spring-Summer, 1998 Newsletter, along with greetings from our then newly-discovered cousin.

Emigration Monument, Bremerhaven, Germany. Photo courtesy of Karl Gerking of Bremerhaven, who wrote that the chain connects the old and the new worlds.

The plaque reads: "This monument commemorates the beginning of German emigration to America in 1683. For millions of Europeans Bremerhaven was the port of embarkation for those leaving the old world and going to the new. Veneration and esteem for the past and hope and confidence for the future form the basis for the continued friendship between the people of Germany and the United States of America. October 1983."

The Chain September 2001Recently Karl sent a different view of the same picture as a condolence for a truly international tragedy. He wrote,

"Hello Beth.

I think you know this image.
It is the connection with Germany to USA.
The chain.
The same picture like in the Gerking News 1998.
Here a demonstration for solidarity.
The American - German - women - club in Bremerhaven.

I did think, I must send it to you.

Regards Karl. "

Karl, we thank you!
