My dear Dr. Thompson: -
I have your letter in regard to the Sutpens [sic-Sutphens], and think there must have been a mistake about there being such a genealogy. I hear nothing further from the Atens at Baldmount, Pa, but hope they may write soon. I do not think they can be of the Atens [by hand] formerly at the Water Gap, as we thought we had all that crowd traced down to the present generation.
If at any time you find an opportunity to consult the N.Y. Genealogical & Biographical Record, I think you may find much of interest in it. I am advised that on page 19 of that work, the fact is shown that Elizabeth Thomas who married Adrian Hendricksen Aten, was from a Dutch Church in London. Now I have thought perhaps an examination of that work(Gen & Bio. Record) might possibly show the date of their marriage. I am informed by the editor of the work refered to, that in Vol xiii.Paage 170. appears the bap. pf [sic] Adrian, son of Thomas Aten and Elsje Schillman. And, that the record shows that the bap. took place at the house of Adrian Hendricksen Aten, and that he and his wife Lisbet Thomas were the subscribing witnesses. Date Sept 4th, 1695.
The N.Y. Gen. & Bio. Record have a very valuable library at 226 West 58th, street N.Y. which is open to visitors from out of town. This library may contain much of interest when some of us get an opportunity to examine it.
Remember me to Mrs. Thompson and believe me,
Very sincerely yours,
