This index, prepared for the editors, reflects surname spellings as used by William Duncan Cameron in his 1913-1918 notes that are compiled this book. Much of what he recorded occurred a century before him. The book appeared nearly another century later. From such a vantage point, the compiler began by trying to "standardize and/or modernize" the author's usages. As the index compilation proceeded, it became clear that the author's versions were more reliable. Except where contradictions were obvious, the originals are indexed.

The Mc, Mac, and Donald cases cause trouble. Illustrating the point, In my own family, the progenitor, Donald "McDonnell" came from Morar, Scotland. His children included a son Angus "McDonell", who had children Alexander "McDonell", William "MacDonell", Margaret "McDonnell". The fourth child, Annie, eliminated the problem by marrying a "McDonald" and leaving town. All of them may be right.
