His parents died when he was a child, and he was brought up by relatives in Tandragee, ARM. After studying at Trinity College Dublin he was ordained in the Church of England in 1906, and went on to serve as a clergyman in London (1906-09); Bradford (1909-16); Sandylands, Heysham, LAN (1916-38); and Feniscowles, LAN (1938-46).
