ARNOLD

BARRY, Ill. -
Earl Leroy Arnold, 77, of Barry, Ill., died at 6:45 p.m. April 19, 1999, at Hannibal Regional Hospital.

Funeral services for Mr. Arnold will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Kirgan Funeral Home in Barry. Burial will be at Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal.

Mr. Arnold was born Feb. 11, 1922, in Hunnewell to Orval Earl and Mary Elizabeth Foster Arnold.

He was married to Lucia Mae Cox on May 29, 1943, in Hannibal. She survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Ronald Leroy Arnold and Donald Hollis Arnold, both of Barry; five grandsons; one granddaughter; one great-granddaughter; one nephew, Walter Orvie Stolte of Escondido, Calif., who lived with Mr. Arnold and his family before entering the U.S. Navy; and one sister, Ruby Ellis of Belton, Ill.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Russell Arnold and Everett Arnold; and two sisters, Thelma Stolte and Mary Cline.

Mr. Arnold attended Bird Slough School at East Hannibal, completed his High School Equivalency Diploma and completed additional education and training with Kroger's Foods in St. Louis. He was engaged in farming all of his life.

Mr. Arnold had been a seed corn salesman for 30 years beginning with Morton Seeds at Bowen, Ill., was a meat cutter and drove transport for FS Services. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Barry, a 50-year member of Barry Order of Odd Fellows and a 4-H leader for the Barry Builders Club.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church of Barry.

ARNOLD

Mark D. Arnold, 41, of O’Fallon, died Tuesday (Oct. 9, 2001) at his residence.

Mr. Arnold was a manager of mortgage collections at Citicorp for 10 years.

No visitation was planned. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 7701 Highway N, Dardenne. Burial will be private.

Among survivors are his parents, E. David Arnold and Barbara B. Arnold of O’Fallon; and a brother, Michael Arnold of O’Fallon.

ARNOLD

Orville Earl (Boss) Arnold, 78, widely known retired farmer of Hull passed away Sat. morning at 1:40, in the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Cline of Hannibal, Mo., due to a heart ailment and other complications. Mr. Arnold retired and held a sale about a month ago and moved with his wife into the home of their daughter.

Funeral services were held Tues., PM at 2 o’clock in the Hull Methodist Church with Rev. Glenn R. Grammer officiating. Mrs. Clessent Brinkman sang "When You Come To the End of the Road" and "In The Garden" accompanied by Mrs. Alice Kenady. Interment was in Quincy Memorial Park. Casket-bearers were, Leroy and Richard Kenady, Fred Schwartz, William Parrish, Edward Marks and William Riepe. Clark Funeral Home of Hannibal were in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Arnold had lived near Hull in the East Hannibal neighborhood almost 40 years. He was born in Holmes county, Ohio Jan. 20, 1884, a son of Joseph and Lucinda Reed Arnold. He was a Methodist by faith and a member of 2.O.O.F. lodge No 302 of Hunnewell, Mo. The lodge held services at the Funeral Home at 8 o’clock Sun. night.

His marriage to Mary Elizabeth Foster took place March 25, 1908 at Maquon, Ill., she survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Walter (Thelma) Stolte of New Canton, Mrs. Lloyd (Ruby) Ellis, Alba, Ga., and Mrs. Richard (Mary) Cline, Hannibal; Three sons, Russell of Hull, Everett of Plainville and Leroy of Barry; three brothers, Julius of Springfield, August of Sedalia and James E. of Lockwood, Mo.; a sister, Mrs. Herman (Katherine) Winters of Scott City, Kansas; 19 grand children and 29 great grand-children. Five sisters preceded him in death.

 

ARNOLD

Rites Wednesday For Mrs. Arnold

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Arnold, 81, of Hull, Ill., died at 1:20 a.m. Sunday in Levering Hospital where she was admitted two hours earlier. She was the widow of Orville E. Arnold who died a week ago, March 31, 1962.

Services will be conducted at the Methodist Church in Hull Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock.

Rev. Glenn Grammer, pastor, will officiate and interment will be in Quincy Memorial Park.

Friends may call at the Clark Funeral Home here after 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. The body will be taken to the church at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Rebekah services will be conducted Tuesday night at 7:30 by the Hunnewell Lodge No. 309.

Mrs. Arnold was born in Bedford County, Pa., September 19, 1880, a daughter of the late David L. and Rebecca Rowsey Foster. She had resided in Pike County, Ill., for 39 years. She attended the Methodist Church. Mrs. Arnold was a member of Hunnewell Rebekah Lodge No. 309.

She and Mr. Arnold were married in Maquon, Ill., March 25, 1908. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Walter (Thelma) Stolte of New Canton, Mrs. Lloyd (Ruby) Ellis, Albany, Ga., and Mrs. Richard (Mary) Cline, Hannibal; three sons, Russell of Hull, Everett of Plainville and Earl Leroy of Barry; one brother, Lawrence Foster of Ft. Madison, Iowa; two sisters, Mrs. Stella Dale of Ft. Madison and Mrs. Anna Freet of Alexis, Ill., 19 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and other relatives.

Four brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.

 

ARNOLD

Rose E. Arnold, 60, of 2925 Vermont, died at 8 a.m. Thursday (June 7, 1979) in Lincoln Hill Nursing Center. She had been in ill health for two years.

Mrs. Arnold was born in Stoutsville, Mo., on July 1, 1918 a daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth Gatson Rice. She was married to Everett Arnold Aug. 15, 1936 in Hannibal, Mo. She was a licensed practical nurse and had worked for the Adams County Health Department as a visiting nurse from 1965 to 1977. She has worked at Motorola for 12 years before working for the health department. She was forced to retire in 1977 because of ill health. She was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, Ostomy Club, American Cancer Society and Project Find of the Salvation Army.

Surviving are her husband; two sons, David of Florrisant, Mo., and Joe of Dallas, Tex.; a daughter, Mrs. Roger (Sandra) Jensen of East Peoria, Ill.; a brother, Irvin Rice of St. Louis; two sisters, Mrs. Glennon (Lois) Moyers of Richland, Wsh., and Mrs. Pauline Moyers of Hannibal, Mo. and five grandchildren.

Services will be held 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the Haugh and Son Funeral Home and 10 a.m. in St. Peter Church. Burial will be in the Quincy Memorial Park. The family suggests memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Visiting Nurses Service.

 

BARDEN

Laila T. Barden, of Richmond, formerly of Powhatan, died January 9, 1994. She is survived by two daughters, Vivian B. Tulgetska, of Richmond, and Barbara B. Arnold, of St. Louis, MO; one brother, Garnett S. Thomas, of Highland Springs; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. Her remains rest at the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hgwy, Powhatan, where services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday. Interment Union Baptist Church Cemetery, Amelia. The family will receive friends tonight from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

 

BARDEN

M.E. Barden's Services Held; Contractor

Funeral services for M. E. Barden, 78, a general building contractor, were to be held today at 2:30 p.m. at Woody Funeral Home. Burial was to be in Oakwood Cemetery.

Mr. Barden, of 600 Hazelhurst Ave., died Saturday in a local hospital.

Mr. Barden had been in business for 30 years. He previously had worked as a carpenter for a Richmond contractor.

He was born in Amelia County. He was a member of Union Prayer Group Church in Richmond.

Mr. Barden is survived by his wife, Mrs. Bessie Barden; two sons, Francis L. Barden of Richmond and Ray C. Barden of Norfolk; four sisters, Mrs. Estelle Zuidema of Norfolk, Mrs. Maimie Poore and Mrs. Edith Poore of Amelia and Mrs. Gladys Nash of Richmond; two brothers, Andrew Barden of Powhatan and Archer Barden of Richmond; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Died May 23, 1979 at his residence, Robert A. Barden of Route 4, Powhatan. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Laila T. Barden; two daughters, Mrs. Vivian B. Tulgetstka of Richmond and Mrs. Barbara B. Arnold of St. Louis, Mo.; four sisters, Mrs. Maimie Poore of Powhatan, Mrs. Edith Poore of Amelia, Mrs. Estelle Zuidema of Baltimore and Mrs. Gladys Nash of Sebring, Fla.; one brother, E. A. Barden of Richmond; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Remains rest at the Rose Funeral Home, Powhatan. Funeral services will be held 2 P.M. Friday at May Memorial Baptist Church. Interment Union Baptist Church Cemetery, Amelia Co. Mr. Barden was a retired employee of the American Tobacco Co.

 

BIGGER

Harvey Samuel Bigger, age 76, a lifelong resident of Cumberland Co., died at a Richmond Hospital, January 25, 1974. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Annie Thomas Bigger; two granddaughters, Mrs. Patsy Weaver Murphy, Mrs. Connie Weaver Saul and three great-grandchildren all of Roanoke; two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Webb of Glen Allen, and Mrs. Mattie Walton of Cartersville; Four brothers, Walter S. Ellsworth and George Bigger of Richmond, and Jack Bigger of Delaware. Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 27, at Oak Grove Baptist Church at 2 P.M. Interment in church cemetery. Remains rest at the Rose Funeral Home, Powhatan, Va. Family request in lieu of flowers contributions be made to the Heart Fund.

 

DOHR

Entered into rest on Saturday, March 20, 1915, at 10:45 p.m., Katie Dohr (nee Rausch), dearly beloved wife of Nickolaus Dohr, and beloved daughter of Adam and Annie Rausch, and dear sister, sister-in-law and aunt, at the age of 18 years 8 months and 8 days.

Funeral on Tuesday, March 23, at 8:30 a.m., from residence, 1801 South Ninth street, to SS. Peter and Paul’s Church, thence to SS. Peter and Paul’s Cemetery.

FOSTER

Ethel Alt Foster

Ethel Alt Foster of Greenville died Saturday at Briarcliff Health Center. No services are planned at this time.

She was born on July 4, 1910, in St. Louis, Mo., to Hermand and Emelie Paubel Alt. She married Frederic Allan Foster on Dec. 30, 1939, in St. Louis. She was a Methodist.

Mrs. Foster is survived by daughters and sons-in-law Sally Foster and Larry E. Paaske of Grrenville and Mary Foster and Ed Ryan of Bolingbrook, Ill.; sister Vera Waring of Eustis, Fla; grandchildren Sheri Cope and Michele Peek and nephews Richard S. Waring and L. Arthur Waring. She was preceded in death by her husband.

Memorials may be made to SP Memorial Fund to benefit Youth Involvement in Brown Swiss Cattle.

JOHNSON

Mrs. Johnson, 90, Dies Sunday; Served As FHA Committeewoman

PROSPECT, Feb. 1- Funeral services for Mrs. Lou Green Johnson, 90, were held today (Tuesday) at 2 p.m. at the Prospect United Methodist Church, with interment in the church cemetery. Mrs. Johnson died Sunday, Jan. 30, in a local nursing home.

Born in Amelia County on June 30, 1886, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Kathryn Green. Her husband was the late Richard A. Johnson.

She was a member of the Prospect United Methodist Churh, a charter member of the Women’s Society of Christian Service and a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Pamplin Chapter No. 58.

Being a successful farm operator of the Prospect community, Mrs. Johnson was appointed the first woman in Virginia, and one of a few in the nation, to serve as a member of a county committee of the Farmers Home Administration. The appointment was made by the Secretary of Agriculture on July 1, 1946 for a three-year term.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Lou J. Southall, of Richmond; five sons, Raymond, Edward, Clyde, Sydnor and Lewis Johnson, all of Prospect; and two step-daughters, Mrs. Mary Crews of Prospect, and Mrs. Lucille Sprouse, of Charlottesville; six grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

 

PENNINGTON

Died Thursday, August 20th, 1970, William J. "Bill" Pennington Jr., 2814 4th Ave. He is survived by one son William J. "Billy" Pennington III; three stepdaughters; mother, Carie L. Pennington of Powhatan, Va.; three brothers, Roy M., Floyd E. and James P. Pennington. The remains rest at the Joseph W. Bliley Funeral Home, Third and Marshall, where services will be held Sat. 2 P.M. with interment in Oakwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Hazel T. Powell of 316DD Mullens lane, Highland Springs, died Friday, March 7, 1975, at her residence. She is survived by her husband, George E. Powell; four sons, R.J. Rathweiler, Charles E., George D., and Carroll H. Powell; three sisters, Mrs. O.M. Graham of Salem, Va., Mrs. Annie Bigger of Cumberland, Va., and Mrs. Laila Barden of Powhatan, Va.; two brothers, L.K. Thomas of Denver, Colo., and G.S. Thomas of Highland Springs, also ten grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Remains rest at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave., where services will be conducted Monday at 3:30 P.M. Interment Washington Memorial Park.

Ruth V. Thomas, 80, of Highland Springs, died Sunday, January 5, 2003.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Garnett S. Thomas; two sons, Darrell Lee Thomas and his wife, Patricia C., Francis Allen Thomas; five grandchildren, Joshua, Alexander, Ryan, Amy, and Cody Thomas; and a sister, Evelyn Smith.  Her family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave., where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday.  Interment Washington Memorial Park.
