3. John ARNOLD (son of Francis Arnold and Rachel Arnold), b. before 1746 VA; d. in Randolph Co., NC. Married Martha WHITLOCK who also died in Randolph Co., NC. Was Captain in Rev. War. Left Spotsylvania Co., VA about mid 1778 and moved to Randolph Co., NC, then to Guilford Co., NC with some of his Davenport relatives. Was found in Randolph Co., NC on 1790 Census, line 772. Capt. John Arnold was one of the founders of Randolph Co., NC and when it formed in 1779, was elected to represent it in the House of Commons. Took his seat on October 8, 1779. He was elected to the Senate in 1789.

William Davenport owned 30 acres on the North Anna River in Spotsylvania County but he sold it to his brother David Davenport, who lived in Cumberland County, before 1767. (src. Family moved to Randolph Co., North Carolina about 1779, then to Laurens District, South Carolina by 1789 and finally settling into Greenville District by 1800.

MY NOTE: Nothing is known of this William Arnold but I believe that he is NOT related to Mary Davenport's Arnold family. I believe this to be a case of two different Arnold lines merging into one.

1. Augustin (Augustine) ARNOLD – b. 1778 VA. Raised in Culpeper Co., VA. Married Nancy DELPH , daughter of Henry Delph and Ann Powell of Culpeper Co., VA, and moved to Abbeville Co., SC about 1800. Died 1844 Abbeville Co., SC at age 61. Engaged in mercantile pursuits and later in life was a farmer (src. PERRINS, HISTORY KENTUCKY 1886, pg. 636 Simpson County and AFAS VOL 3, NO. 3, pg. 133)

He lived with his parents until his marriage in February 1831 to (1) Matilda CLIFTON in Abbeville Co., SC. She was the daughter of William and ? (Deem) Clifton of Edgefield Co., SC. Matilda Clifton Arnold died 1841 Barren Co., KY where the family had moved to by 1837. In 1842, Dr. W.E. Arnold married (2) Polly Ann DELPH (src. Couple went to Mississppi with her parents, and Arnold served in the civil war from Mississippi in a artillary battery. He was taken POW and held in NJ until the war finished. (src. 2. Benjamin ARNOLD – Married Elizabeth HILL after 1747 in King William Co., Virginia (src. Greenwood County Sketches, pg. 143) She was the daughter of Col. Edward Hill and Elizabeth Williams of Little Rocky Creek, Louisa Co., VA. Benjamin died between 1760-1780. Elizabeth Hill Arnold immediately married James EDWARDS after the death of Benjamin but that marriage was short also. James Edwards died on October 19, 1788, John Waller and Benjamin Waller were named guardians of the children.

Did give to his granddaughter, Rosamond Roberts, wife of the said James Edwards and mother to said Judith Arnold, certain slaves, descendants of which are claimed by the said Arnold and his wife, and the said Arnold hath this day agreed to compromise the matte. With this marriage, she had three known children which were listed by name in her father’s last will and testament. They are: Ann Scuddy McGee; Austin Edward Scuddy, and John Scuddy. (src. Nancy Lumsden was the daughter of George Lumsden and Elizabeth Duke of Spotsylvania. Left Spotsylvania Co., VA in late 1700’s and moved to South Carolina. James died in Abbeville Co., SC 1836 (now Greenwood Co.). His will was dated August 3, 1827 and was proved March 16, 1836. Executors were his sons, Archibald and Alexander B. Arnold plus James’ son-in-law, John Cochran. Witnesses were D. L. Wardlaw; John V. Reynolds and Jesse S. Adams, all neighbors of his in the Deadfall area of Greenwood County. Nancy, was not mentioned in the will so she must have died before 1827. Occupation was listed as "Planter". (src. ABSTRACTS OF OLD NINETY-SIX, pg. 1). James Arnold and wife, Nancy sold 108 acres on January, 29, 1793 to Thomas Shirley. This property sat in Spotsylvania Co. and adjoined John C. Waller, Clement Boroughes, James Wiglesworth Junior and Senior. Was signed by both James and Nancy and was given to James by his brother, John Arnold. (src. 1. Dr. Alexander B. ARNOLD – b. 1793; d. March 3, 1853 Lowndesville, Abbeville County, SC. Married Elizabeth Y. GROVES, daughter of Joseph Groves and Sallie Alston of Lowndesville. No children on record but a niece, Elizabeth Yancy Gannt was reared in the home. After Dr. A. B. Arnold’s death, his body was taken from Lowndesville back to the family burial ground. Cemetery is off US Hwy. 25, north of Greenwood. Dr. A. B. Arnold owned several tracts of land which were sold after his death. Dr. A.B. Arnold’s home place was purchased by J. THE SOUTH CAROLINA MAGAZINE OF ANCESTRAL RESEARCH, VOL. IX, NO. 3, 1981). Is found in Abbeville Co., SC in 1820. Occupation was a physician. Religion: Methodist. Title was Major. Lived at his father’s place on the Matthew’s road and was reportedly quite a sportsman, owning a fast horse and a racetrack at Deadfall. Married in 1816 (1) Pamela Partlow, b. 1799 Edgefield Co., SC; d. 1817 Abbeville/Greenwood Co., SC. She was the daughter of John Partlow of Greenwood Co., SC. Archibald Arnold then married his cousin (2) Mahala Reynolds, daughter of Larkin Reynolds. (src. ABSTRACTS OF OLD NINETY-SIX, pg. 1). The couple apparently separated for some reason because Mahala Reynolds Arnold moved to Floyd County, Georgia to be near her brothers, John Vincent Reynolds and Benjamin Reynolds. Archibald Arnold had his eulogy in the "Abbeville Banner" on August 19, 1846 (src. THE SOUTH CAROLINA MAGAZINE OF ANCESTRAL RESEARCH, VOL. NOTE: (taken from GREENWOOD COUNTY SKETCHES, pg. 338) Pamela Partlow Arnold’s father, John Partlow was the first of the Partlows to settle in what is now Greenwood County, South Carolina. He arrived in 1797. He became a prosperous planter, his lands extended from the present Creswell Ave. in Greenwood to well below So. Greenwood, more than two miles away. He built his home about where Callie Self Memorial Baptist Church now stands, and he named his new place "New Market", in honor of his former Virginia residence. The intersection of Matthew’s and Barksdale Ferry Roads was near his home. There was a store and nearby were large stables to accommodate a travelers’ horses.

John Partlow was born in 1766 in Spotsylvania Co., VA to John and Sarah Reynolds Partlow. His oldest sister, Sallie Partlow, married Archibald’s cousin, Thomas Davenport, and lived in Laurens County, SC. (src. GREENWOOD COUNTY SKETCHES, pg. 338-339)

Hart is found on a 1816 Abbeville Co. document trying to get the town of Abbeville incorporated (src. SOUTH CAROLINA DEPARTMENT OF ARCHIVES AND HISTORY, SERIAL NUMBER S165010, ITEM #2) and he is on the 1820 Abbeville Co., SC census, page 36, two names below his father, John Arnold. Living at home with Hart P. Arnold was three daughters under 10 years old and a wife. He had six slaves; 1830 Abbeville census, pg. 8 and the 1840 Abbeville census, page 52.
