6. Isaac3 Cazneau (Isaac2, Paix1) was born at Boston 3 Jul7 1729, baptized at Old South Church 6 July 1729 (CRs, 156), and died at Boston (Columbian Centinel of 10 November 1787), aged 58 years. He married 23 October 1752, Elizabeth Lash, who was born at Boston 2 October 1732, baptized at New North Church 15 October 1732 ("The New North Church, Boston, 1714-1799," manuscript, Boston City Archives, 129), and died at Boston (Columbian Centinel of 5 February 1825), aged 92 years, daughter of Nicholas and Elizabeth (Skillen) Lash.

Elizabeth Cazneau owned the Covenant at the New North Church in Boston on 24 June 1753, just two months before her first child was baptized there (CRs, 40).

Isaac was a ship captain. He is listed as the captain of the Mannista, a ship of 170 tons, which sailed from Salem, MA to Liverpool, England on 6 Aug 1755; to Lisbon, 27 July 1756; and to the West Indies on 14 Sep 1756 ("Early Shipping of Salem," Essex. Inst. Hist. Coll., 68 (1932):55). He is listed in the "Records of Vessels entering the port of Boston" as arriving 23 Dec 1765 on the schooner Dove from Philadelphia; on the sloop Hannah from New Foundland on 28 Sep 1767; on the ship Diana from London on 1 Jun 1768; and on the sloop Betsey from London on 11 Apr 1769 (BRC 29 (1900):275, 297, 305, 313).

In Dec 1775 the Continental Congress authorized the construction of thirteen frigates. John Hancock arranged to have his friend, Thomas Cushing, appointed to supervise the construction of the two to be built in MA. Learning that Isaac Cazneau wanted a berth, John Hancock offered him the command of the twenty-four gun frigate (William Fowler, "John Hancock: The Paradoxical President," Register 130 (1976):170). Isaac Cazneau declined his offer in a letter of 4 Apr 1776. John Hancock had left the keys to his house in the care of Isaac when the British occupied Boston. This letter is Isaac's report on the condition of Hancock's property after the evacuation of Boston (Capt. Isaac Cazneau to John Hancock, 4 Apr 1776, Hancock Papers, box 17, folder 4, at the Society):

"Sir I Recd your favor ... and Heartily Congratuc you on the Evacuation of the Troops from hence ... I am now to Inform you of the State of your own & Aunts Interest, The Mantion House was thought by most People a Place devoted to Destruction, has Escap'd a Scouering, in more than one Sence, - The Best Furniture I put into the Chamber back of the Great Chamr and keep't the Key till about three weeks before Genl Clinton Left the House, then was sent for and the Key demanded to Search for papers, I told him there was not any in the House, but that would not do, when we came to Open the Door the Key would not Turne. I told him some Person had Spoild the Lock by Trying with some other Key, on this he seem'd much Displeas'd and said would Brake it open ... a few days Before he Left the House he sent for me and Desired I would Look about & See if any things was Wanting, told him the Great Settee was not in the House, & Desired he would see returnd which he did. The Back Gammon Table in the Liberary was wanting ... he desired one of his Capts. to purchase one as good and send it up, but I never saw it yet ... The Stable and Coach House has been a Hospital, a great number of Small Windows below and above in the back and south End have been cut out, the Garden is Pretty well ... your house where Pelham Lived Intirely destroy'd, Mr. Pennys House come next wch was a Barrack the great Stair case all to Pieces & Other were very badly Treated, your Aunts house (D Greenleaf's) Pretty well Except Cellar Partitions ... your new Ship they Scuttled Cut the Stern post two thirds of half way up from the Keel ... All the Books & Papers &c that was in the Counting House I have in Safety ... your and &Mr Adam's Pictures is safe ... The Town in Genl is Shockingly Defaced Especially the Places of Publick worship, your name on the Corner Stone of D. Coopers Church is mangled out with an ax ... I am now to Return you my Sincere thanks for your Kind Intention toward me, Especially for one of the Ships, at Present had Reather decline it, my wife, Family & some friends are desireous I would not Accept. Before I Recd your Letter Mr Lowell wrote me mentiong your Intention to Imploy some Person to Ride through the Country to Settle your acct & Collect your Debts ... I desired him to write you I would undertake it, now Sir if you think I can be Serviceable to you that way Please to Command me, if any thing in future Should Offer (in your Gift) that would Afford a Comfortable Liveing, and be the means of Keeping me from Sea till happier Days, I should Prefere it ... Your Most Obedt Servt, Isaac Cazneau."

She m2 Nathaniel Goodwin of Newburyport (HEC).
